U.S. Politics

Oh, The Onion. What would I do without thee?

We did have one of our first (that I'm aware of) ICE arrests in Manhattan yesterday. May not have been the first, but it's the first one I've seen that got reported on Citizen, the app that folks can use to report crimes, accidents, etc. A handful of friends/acquaintances on both sides of the aisle had said before "Oh, we don't need to worry about all that, this is NY, one of the most progressive cities in the country. We won't let that happen here." Sure, Jan.

Part of me wants this to keep boiling. I feel for everyone affected, but this might be the crucible we need.
Sadly, I kinda feel the same. Not that I want any of the common folk to suffer. That's horrible, and it's undoubtedly going to change, if not outright take, many lives, but it's those desperate times that really lead to change. Sadly, some folks just don't get it until it's them or their loved ones that are affected. So long as they know who the one truly responsible for their suffering is. Who's gonna be the next Luigi Mangione?

I tell myself the same thing, but then again, rich, former presidents have access to the best medical care in the world and tend to live forever. I'm old enough to remember SNL jokes about Bill Clinton eating everyone's McDonald's and that dude is still kicking at 79. The ages of the last presidents upon death: Bush (94), Reagan (93), Carter (100), Ford (93), Nixon (81). Biden is 82, Bush Part 2 is also 79 and Obama is a spry 64 (can we go back to not electing septuagenarians to office, please?). Crazy we have to go all the way back to Nixon to find a president dying in his 80s (though it doesn't look like Biden is making it to 90 given his health issues). Trump could obviously buck that trend, but odds are he's alive and well enough by the end of his term and all bets are off for what happens then.
The only difference is that Trump was already 70 when he became president. He's a billionaire, so it's possible he had the best possible medical care leading up to that point anyway, though I kind of doubt it because he surrounds himself with cranks.

Still, they'll hook him up to every machine imaginable—Darth Vader-style—to keep him going.

Counting on Trump's death is a fool's game anyway. I don't believe for a moment that he's the only one that can do what he's doing. People said the same thing about Un's grandaddy, and they now live in a country where that family is worshipped as literally Jesus.

That's what I'm wondering. Who do they prop up. They need a figurehead. I just don't see any of the current people in that role.

It's whoever has the most money, really. They're all inept, so I don't necessarily see any of them in the role either, but as always, they'll follow the money. I could see that charisma black hole/human tub of sour cream Jared Kushner stepping into power just by paying people off. He's close enough to the family name to be in on some of the bigger/more secretive discussions, and he's already got his hand in the shady side of things with his dealings with Qatar.

I think if he'd died while Biden was in office the sudden drop in momentum could have sunk the movement. Now that the election is past, I think that's much less likely simply because the system has been so thoroughly rotted from the inside. So many people have been fired or otherwise removed from the picture. There is hardly a corner of the government now that doesn't have an infestation in the walls. We learned in his first term how much was riding on norms and humans in various long term roles that simply kept this train moving. Now all that has been completely compromised, and there are many fewer people who even knew the norms, much less are willing to fight to bring them back.

Like, even if we have fair elections again, good luck removing guys like Stephen fucking Miller from Washington now. They're dug in like ticks.

(all that said, I'm still hoping to outlive that fucker)

Literally anyone. Once the power dynamic is set, and the party's position is secure, you don't really need the cult of personality as much anymore. Or, I should say, you don't need the person at the front to be charismatic. You start just TELLING people they're charismatic. Kimmy Jimmy is a gigantic fucking loser that would get stuffed into lockers in any normal high school, and would probably have several restraining orders for being gross around girls. But he's Korean Jesus because the government says so.

That's where we're headed, which is a fact no one seems to want to confront. ANYONE, at this point, could stand at a podium and scream about how they will carry on Trump's legacy, do the great work that he has started, defend America, blah blah blah, and be beloved -enough- by just enough people to hold onto the power Republicans have clawed over for themselves. Any half-way decent speech writer could handle the job of making that person not look like a complete fool. In fact, I'd argue, at this point someone who ISN'T Trump would be more successful at what they're trying to do, using the memory of Trump, than Trump is actually being.
