U.S. Politics

If Amazon lays off 30,000 people BEFORE the holidays, that's not "AI efficiencies," that's a fucking recession alarm bell, yeah? I cannot wrap my brain around why these fucking oligarchs are so determined to rule over a barren wasteland of a world. They're crashing the economy out of spite. Or stupidity.
UPS cut about 50k jobs this year. Their stock is up. It's not sustainable.
The most stark example of this sort of thinking is in the court filings for the Titan sub. That guy was so high on his own supply it was absurd. I really do think that a certain amount of wealth is basically brain damage. Your interaction with reality becomes so warped that you not only don't care about what's true anymore, you couldn't figure it out with a gun to your head.
It's wealth + Twitter. It's yes-men on one side and bots telling you being a Nazi is fine and good on the other.
I absolutely believe we're going to discover mass graves in the next 10 years.
This is why I stopped talking to a neighbor who has always TRIED To be friends with us. Like he actively pursues his liberals next door to hang out. But he's an "I got mine" NIMBY type and when we were talking about the free speech issue a few weeks back he basically said "well I've got mine and I'll be fine in a year" I was like well fuck off then. Enjoy your life and leave me the fuck alone. Dude has three rental properties, retired at 50, a motorcycle, an 80k pickup truck and a BMW, a pool and two beautiful kids. That's not RICH rich, but it's rich enough to make him an asshole to keep ahead of people he thinks less of.
One of the fundamental differences between liberals and conservatives is whether you believe a rising tide lifts all boats. The 2024 election proved that half this country can't be satisfied with their place in the world unless they have someone to spit on.

"I make $30,000 more, but the burrito taxi costs $30 now? Fuck that."
For reasons too silly to go into I'm on the AI steering committee at the library where I work and it is SUCH a lousy tool and it's wild to me that everyone keeps talking in breathless tones about how it's 'going to change everything'. The BEST apps people have shown as part of our steering initiative are basically "google, but you talk to it and sometimes it lies" and "it summarizes papers I don't really want to read, but I still need to sort of read because I can't trust the summary actually". Like, there is NO killer app to this thing. It's bananas. A multi-trillion dollar solution in search of a problem.
It's crazy-making. The number of people in my office who gleefully use ChatGPT is astounding. I don't exactly work with a bunch of corporatists, either. I work at a college.
he used it to write love letters to his wife and it was pretty good at that
Outsourcing the things that define the human experience is daffy. You're saving time on life's best moments to do what, exactly?

I've said it on this board before but I said a few years back I had to get the fuck out of tech before it killed me, and this incident was the match that lit that fire. Fuck the entire industry. It's chockablock with psychopaths and bootlickers and I hate everything about it. (Remember when technology made cool things instead of degrading humanity?)

My entire life I was promised that technology would free us to pursue human interests like art and poetry and woodworking and sitting around drinking and fucking and shit like that. Instead, the robots are stealing from us to make art, and we're LUCKY to be allowed to keep our shitty jobs that barely pay enough to survive, and we're left with no time for aforementioned fucking and poetry.

I mean, such is the folly of man. We create something cool and new that's supposed to help advance us as a species, and in no time at all, we privatize it, turn it against each other, and let it destroy us. Because we're a species of excess. We can't be happy with what we have, we have to strive for more. Fire, guns, medicine, food, clothing, technology. To create is to destroy. And that's all the things that we actively use; AI is meant to act for us, without our input or control. And we really think we can stop it from destroying us somehow, directly or indirectly?

The very fact that "Tech Bro" is a phrase that exists and has immediate negative connotations kinda sums it all up. Those that live their lives defined by the very thing they're both attempting to understand and attempting to control, while using it as an excuse as to why they're better than someone else who doesn't understand it as well.

Back to the latrine pits, sentient scum.

I raised this point in a discussion in a class earlier this year and some 20 year old kid told me robots and AI shouldn't enable people to relax or have time to do things because we're meant to be working. At like Dollarama and stuff. Bootstraps.

Of course,.he also believed all the AI content is more valid than actual creative. Not many agreed with him, but some did. Disheartening how you'd even get to that "we're meant to grind" bit at his age.

They know they're gaslighting us at this point. McMahon is a shit stain of a human being but she's not so stupid she can't look at the academic scores. Alabama's what, third lowest in the country and actively working on making sure they can compete with Mississippi for the bottom? No offense meant to anyone on the boards who grew up here but songs and legends are written about how much the state has sabotaged educating its own children.

Fucking idiotic.

Oh yeah, she knows better. She's just fucking evil. Like her rapist, sex-trafficker husband.

Is that the new MAGA trend? Slightly inhuman hues? Feels Hunger Gamesy.

Its like Monty Python's "must be a king. Doesn't have shit all over him" only it's "must be rich, looks like organ failure".
