Oh I get it, and agree that model is critical when dependent on brick-and-mortar stores to distribute the line, but the game has changed dramatically with online ordering and fan channel distribution. As has been discussed ad nauseum, one must factor in those business calculations and make shrewd decisions to justify novel sculpts, accessories, paint applications, and character selection. But these capitalist metrics have left us not only with numerous criminally neglected characters, but also with redundant A-listers, repaints, phone-ins, and "hostage figures". Heck, every time I mention my distaste for the BaF marketing scheme, inevitably multiple people chime in with their oh-so-keen business strategy insights and a million reasons the BaF (or having a constant flow of A-listers) is critical to getting obscure characters and avoid killing the line. Understand this line isn't going anywhere; it is a bottomless gold mine. I think there needs to be exclusive delivery avenues for the more obscure characters that don't depend solely on the flagship line to deliver them. And like
@Beamish said, ideally the BaF should function to deliver those obscure characters but it seems like it more often effectively serves to coax us into buying yet another gd Iron Man, Spider-Man, Wolverine, or flash-in-the-pan modern figure many don't want. Currently, many people arent buying entire BaF waves but instead going to ebay or setting up trades on forums like this to obtain their parts. Also it seems the current model (and pricing) has pushed more and more people to play the long game and wait for sales or clearance prices for many of their purchases. Yet the line marches on.
It has been made quite clear ML is considered an adult collector's line, so I assert it is high time that it's actually treated as such. Sure some figures/characters won't be as popular or sell as well as others, but as if that doesn't happen now. Simply reduce or increase production numbers according to obscurity/popularity. If your estimates prove to be off, put more into production. Again, it seems they are already doing this to some extent. I mean, isn't Target ordering full cases of only one or two specific figures?
Like I incessantly assert, we should have multiple themed sublines analogous to Gamerverse, but "Premier", "Monsters", "Supernatural", "Marvel Handbook", "Silver Age", etc., and even "From the Rack" for modern takes. And as others have mentioned, have a separate evergreen line for A-and-B listers and consistently serve that shiz up in the brick-and-mortar stores for all the kids and normies. And for all you who want to keep the current BaF model because you like the "variety" it provides, just think of the variety that would be available to you with multiple sublines.
If they're actually themed properly, I wouldn't even be averse to them being BaF waves.
Sorry for the long-winded rant but,
@EnigmaticClarity hasn't been posting much as of recent, so I expect y'all were jonesin' for a dissertation.
Edit: Ha! It looks like
@Enforcer already beat me to the dissertation.
