IIRC Sutter basically wrote that show so that Katey could have a serious role after being typecast as Peg. "Nobody takes my wife seriously, so I'm gonna rewrite Hamlet as a biker gang saga and cast her as Gertrude." Big wife guy energy (in a good way) building an entire epic around proving your wife shouldn't be typecast.

Loved the show and watched the whole thing event-style with some friends, we'd text DURING the episode in reaction, but ridiculous is the right word. I was fighting with the Irish immigration office the season the gang end up in Ireland and when Opie said "let's get out of this moss covered shithole" my soul left my body (I still wish i'd stayed but the timing of that season and my own life sent me)

Not to derail the entire thread into how ridiculous that show was, but the network, according to Sutter, told him about that particular subplot, in his own words:


No penetration.
 
I'll typically bail on a show, but Sutter had me staying to the end of SoA and The Shield is one of my all time favorites. Although, I can't remember if he stepped back on the last seasons of either show. Either way, I enjoyed both.

HA! I have literally done this with stage plays for girlfriends past and of course for my wife. Like have you even dated me if I haven’t written something to try to showcase a broader set of your talents?

As for SoA: I dig it, but for some reason I never watched the last season. And I loved the Ireland subplot: totally insane, but why not!
 
Some "villainous character as the main character" shows can get real soapy, but yeah SOA just went for it a lot of times. I wasn't a big fan of the ending at the time but it was far from the worst finale for shows like that. I also admit I sat through the entire Ireland season utterly perplexed, heh. But I think I may be ready to rewatch the series actually.
 
I just recently rewatched SOA and for the first time actually finished it. I think it's a good show in the sense that it does what it set out to do and it does it fairly well. I had to check out the first time I watched it because it just gets so fucking depressing. I don't even LIKE these characters (as people) and even I'm sick of watching them suffer constantly. But it really is handled pretty well in that over-the-top insanity kind of way.

I've started it again a few times, but then remember everything that does come that I have to watch again (not bad, just sad stuff) and I can't keep going.

Okay, that's what it was, heh. I couldn't really remember why I had such a hard time finishing that show, but yeah... I think the only character I really liked was Opie, and.... yeah. But Jax and Tara, I was kinda rooting against BOTH of them.

Well shit. Okay, maybe I'll just watch until I realize I'm not enjoying it. I know I need to at least give the Ireland season another try.
 
It is super dark, but I thought it was worth the journey - always a sign a show has a strong show runner when it can actually do what it plans to do. I guess knowing it's literally based on one of literature's great tragedies at least sets you up to know how it'll turn out for everyone.

I also quote Tommy Flanagan's character almost every single day with his "I was raised Catholic, everything's a worry for me." EVERY DAY.
 
Tig's relationship at the end, which I won't spoil, is WEIRDLY beautiful for a guy that is an utter psychopath otherwise.
All the characters in the show suck and pretty much get what they deserve, with the possible exception of a kid here or there. But there's some really incredible moments and some really incredible writing that deserve to be recognized nonetheless.

Although my favorite part of the show is how Charlie slowly cares less and less about just making Jax obviously English.
 
My biggest thing is how Charlie Hunnam didn't become a bigger star after SOA, and even Pacific Rim. He was one of the better parts of The Gentleman, and completely disappears in the Ed Gein show.

The backstory with how THAT actor ended up in THAT role is kind of funny, but the fact that the writing team and the cast didn't turn it into a gag but rather made it beautiful and moving and respectful is WILD in a show about mostly truly shitty people.
