Marvel Legends Gamerverse

I feel a DeVito Penguin “CONTEMPT FOR THE CZARS OF FASHION!!!!!” monologue coming on . . .

“Flexing” with tags and logos hanging off of clothing/accessories is absolutely insane narcissistic vanity to me. When I see it in public it’s really, REALLY hard to take folks doing it seriously. Feels like a really vile expression of performative capitalistic “competition” and, frankly, disordered and almost sociopathic behavior. I’m not sure how I would ever get past my bias there.

It's safe to say you're not the target audience, and that's okay. Not everything is for everybody. I appreciate different aesthetics including hypebeast, so NYC is a visual treat in that regard because the looks are purposefully done and put together, even if not your personal taste. I have a few pieces from the Kith x X-Men collection including this shirt, which I love wearing to NYCC!

I won't get the Kith Marvel Legends, but it's the kind of thing I'd buy for my friend who doesn't collect figures but has hypebeast home decor (ex. KAWS statues.)

It’s not about the style of the clothes, it’s about the “culture” of “flexing”. The style is irrelevant.
Arrogance and self-aggrandizement will always turn me completely off to a person/place/thing, and “look how rich/successful/powerful I am” is a shameful public stance, in my view.

Why does it bother you? Rich people have always worn rich people clothes.

And I’ve never met a “flexing” rich person I want to associate with.
🤷‍♂️
I just can’t with people who try to “show off” wealth or position or power or prestige. And my studies tell me that the need to do so bespeaks a disordered mind. Also: it’s just fucking gross. I also can’t listen to music where the performer touts their wealth/accomplishments/clout. It doesn’t matter the genre/style/whatever, it’s about the arrogance and the self-aggrandizement.

I work with actors, man. Nothing pisses me off more than “diva” bullshit. I will not tolerate it. If you are trying to show me you are “better” in some way, I’m gonna judge you worse.

Only a weak person performs “strength”.

I fainted when I saw that $135 price tag. I try to spend as little as possible on clothes. I can barely stomach the occasional Homage purchase.

That said, if you like spending your money on clothes, more power to you.

Ha, Homage is HQ'd here in Columbus so they have a couple physical locations that will have decent sales. Funny to hear it mentioned outside this city.

That's fair! It feels like a lot of projection towards people you don't actually know though. I have friends who are very much hypebeasts, because they can afford to be and because it's an aesthetic they like. They aren't trying to show off their wealth; the average person isn't paying enough attention to the next person's clothes to be able to guess how much they spent on them. I liken it to women who like to wear makeup and play around with creative makeup looks; they're doing it because they like it, and they're doing it for the (mostly other) women who will be able to tell how much effort/time/cost they've put into their hobby. I guess what I'm saying is I don't think there's much difference between them and action figure collectors, who are by definition hoarding non-essential items that cost up to hundreds of dollars a pop!

You'd be comatose if I showed you how much I've spent on sunglasses and shoes. I don't have or want children, so that's how I justify it 😂

As long as they aren’t literally showing off price tags and trolling for “clout”, we won’t have any problems.

My concern is more a general disdain for and recognition of the social evils of arrogance and self-aggrandizement. If someone can do “hypebeast” and not be a preening classist show-off, I wouldn’t have anything to which I would object.

And, for the record, I very much do have the same problem with any action figure collectors who try to “flex” their collections or insist on having “clout” in the community. It’s the *behavior*, not the specific item of interest, that I will not tolerate.

I get that. Tacky is tacky no matter the hobby. I personally don't mind arrogance in a person if there's something behind it. I like seeing people who think highly of themselves, I guess because I don't enjoy the company of insecure people and find them more irritating than the arrogant.

Heh.
I despise arrogance even MORE when there is something behind it. Puffing up when you feel small is awful: puffing up when you actually *do* have some power is significantly worse. I literally refuse to associate with arrogant folks. If you are hyping yourself up around me, I just can’t respect you. I value humility above all things, ESPECIALLY in folks with hypercompetence in certain areas. I work with a lot of extremely talented people, and those who try to use that talent as a “flex” always make my naughty list and aren’t likely to ever get off.

(This is a very large part of the “I fucking despise movie Tony Stark” thing with me; he’s exactly the kind of person I would scoff at and also toss out of my house)
