Since 2012, despite crushing the ML game for the most part, sometimes the Hasbro team still drops the occasional dud figure. Often it's a result of odd design choices or character selections that are utterly inexplicable, sometimes it's crappy engineering, and sometimes it's simply yet another version of a character they have run into the ground.
I can think of a few redundant offerings like the numerous black Spider-Man figures or at least 1/3 of the Iron Man releases to date (sorry akat & resilient). Then there are the head scratchers like Warbow or that wakadoo pink Iron Man. And then there are the flat-out failures that could have been easy wins but for one flawed detail. Yes, I'm looking at you, Avalanche. Those are just a few off the top of my head; I know there are a slew more.
What are the figures that leave you perplexed or muttering under your breath, "Who tf was asking for THAT?" or "What in tarnation were they thinking?"

For me, the biggest disappointment was the Mini Comic Wave Adam Warlock.
Oh, it’s a nice enough figure, but we’ve gotten this Infinity Watch version before.
I want a classic Bronze Age version, either the original lighting bolt insignia version (Marvel Premiere #1) or the updated caped version (Strange Tales #180), with soul gem on forehead included.
Please.
Before I die.
😔

Yeah, that sucked.

The Strange Tales wave was a good one for fans of disappointment. Desirable mystic themed BAF, but individual figures including a couple of X-Men, and the third (!) run-out for modern Brother Voodoo. With all the horror/magical characters they could have pulled from (Mordo? Nightmare?), that line up was a bitter pill.

At least there wasn’t an Iron Man in there…

I'm not going to shit on any character or costume getting made. I'm still holding out hope to complete original line-up New Warriors and I know that's a sub-niche at best. That said, 3 Brother Voodoos and 3 Enchantresses in the same outfit are my head scratchers. I could see a re-release after the SDCC sets, but why a third go round?

Spider-Man waves get larded up the most often with random, bleeding edge looks and characters that are out of date by the time the figure hits shelves. These annoy the crap out of me, but the worst is this googly-eyed bastard:

Or Warbow.

These days I'm really trying to not ever think in terms of 'wasted slots.' There lies the way of X-23 'what is a Legend?!' conversations. My view, which I really try to hold to, is that every character, every look, and every storyline is SOMEONE's favorite. Every possibility deserves a figure, if that's true, because everyone deserves their favorite thing. And any discussion beyond that is just 'is this serving the needs of the many over the needs of the few' and that's just not a conversation I care to have as someone that loves Shatterstar and Kylun - because that logic means I would never get some of my favorite characters -ever-.

So, to me, a real 'fail' is when they just biff the thing they're trying to do to the point where it's potentially undesirable even to the person that actually wants that character/look.

For example, as a huge Wolverine fan, I think they biffed it with Astonishing, and I still don't own that figure. They finally were close to a good scale on Wolverine, and they went and made a new, awesome Wolverine that was even taller than the last ones that were -okay-, if not perfect, scale-wise. Then they went and did a whole new body for Wolverine in the Gamerverse line and made that one EVEN TALLER. The latter isn't a fail only because it is accurately doing what they intended it to do. It only becomes a fail if they use that body again for future comic Wolverines.

I'd also consider WWII Wolverine a fail because no one seems to know what it is. In this line of figures that are all based on something (comic, video game, cartoon, or movie/TV show), why do we have a random Wolverine figure that doesn't seem directly based on anything? And why does he have like a weird pouty supermodel face?
It seems like a great WWII soldier figure. But it's a -bad- Wolverine figure and you won't convince me otherwise unless you can identify the source. And given all the conversation around that figure was 'where the hell did this come from?' and a bunch of people posting comic images and stuff that aren't actually in line with this... well, good luck.

Staying on my Wolverine kick -- I'd call '97 Logan a fail. It is a crappy action figure on top of failing to do the thing it is trying to do by cheaping out on the legs. So you get very comic book style detailed legs, and a cartoon-style non-detailed jacket, and it fucking looks weird together. In addition to those legs just being kind of shit to begin with and pretty goddamn old at this point. I've sold two ML collections since those legs first showed up on a Logan figure. Terrible figure AND doing a terrible job at interpreting the source material. THAT is a fail.

Silver Centurion IM is another figure I'd call a huge fail because it seemed to disappoint -specifically- the people it was made for. I don't know of any IM fans (@Akatsuki, @Resilient - chime in here?) that was happy with that figure. If your Iron Man toy doesn't make Iron Man fans happy.. .you done fucked up.

I'd also consider a LOT of MCU figures fails for no other reason than being developed prior to final designs, so you end up with a bunch of figures that don't even match their movie appearance, which is the whole fucking point of the figure.

Man ... classic Brother Voodoo has been a top twenty five want of mine for ages. When he appeared in the leaked listings for the wave, I was *sure* my time had come. After all, they had already done the modern version. Womp womp.

Ahahaha same. Still loved the wave overall, but Brother Voodoo and Dracula AND Hellstrom all being non-iconic versions was a rough pill to swallow.

Oh no, please don't make me turn into that person again...

I don't think I can keep it fully suppressed this time.. I have to let some of it out..

The issue with the Legends Silver Centurion is that it was a stand alone release that a ton of newly sculpted parts, except it was executed completely wrong. Contrast that with something like the Ursa Major wave Stealth Iron Man for a second. They didn't sculpt the new parts to make it comic accurate, but take a look at the wave it came out in.. Brand New BAF sculpt, that is only just now getting re-released as well as 3 newly sculpted figures (Modular Iron Man, Ironheart, Ultron). It's just easy to look at that and go "well they ran out of budget/needed a budget friendly version, but at least the paint job is nice!" Would I have liked it done right? Yes, and I would still buy a proper stealth armor with new a helmet, boots, gauntlets, and shoulder pads on a retro card. But I at least get you can look at the context of the wave and see what happened.

Silver Centurion is a case where they just did not care enough about this iteration of the character to do it right. They didn't care enough to open a comic and find proper references to sculpt the damn thing the right way. Every flaw on that figure comes from a part that was sculpted specifically and exclusively for that figure. They added the rotating shoulder pads and thought that would be enough to win us over because of the "I N N O V A T I O N!," but if you look anywhere else it just doesn't measure up. Just a really insulting offering.

There are an excruciating number of Marvel Legends figures where this is evident. I have a chuckle and a scowl at the ones where it's apparent their reference art was Google Images (Jason Wyngarde comes to mind). The best and worst thing about ML is, as others have said, every figure is someone's favorite character or costume. Which sometimes means the Hasbro team nails it because they care too (GamerVerse Psylocke is a work of art), and sometimes means we get Ch'od with a newly-sculpted hand that has the wrong number of fingers.

Oh, also: weird portraits. Shadowcat's face looks so odd, and it's annoying because everyone around her on my X-Men shelf looks perfect. Except my favorite character, naturally.

Not just google images.. the first google image result!
