I know this post would probably be more at home in the TV show thread, but I had a rewatch of Midnight Mass this week- one of my all-time favorite Netflix miniseries and one of, I think, Mike Flanagan's best. I hadn't watched it in a year or so, but MAN did it hit differently this time with everything going on- watching everyone just blindly follow a stranger because he talks pretty and seems to be doing magic in front of their eyes. I loved it before for its well-written themes and clever subversion of old tropes; I'd already seen the horror element to it (it's certainly more of a religious horror show than anything else), but this time it felt twice as scary because, aside from the fantastical elements, we're basically seeing this play out in the real world right now. I think Flanagan really managed to nail that cult mentality of slowly starting to do horrible things and not even questioning it, just because it can kinda loosely be traced back to scripture; there truly is a Bible verse for everything if you look hard enough and twist meaning hard enough. And not to spoil anything for anyone who hasn't seen it, but in the end, when some folks start to realize what they've done, it hit all the harder. I can only hope we have one of those collective moments; I just hope it isn't too late like in the show. I also look forward to the moment when the most evil one of all has the most cowardly reaction to meeting their fate. But all it takes is a small group of people, those who've been "othered", being willing to step up and away from the masses to put an end to things. We've obviously seen people in our world are willing to step up and have their voices heard, but now it's time to put those words to work.
