I've seen variations of the complaint thread on several forums I've frequented over the years. It's always been a cathartic place to vent about... whatever. Major problems, trivial things. Just a thread to pop in, bitch a bit, and leave. In depth discussion or a one off. Doesn't matter.

I'll start with a few.

First. I woke up this morning to my 9 month old puppy covered in shit in his crate. He was given some meds and he didn't react well. Poor pup must've been in it all night. Had to spend the morning cleaning him, the crate, the floor, and the Rorschach image he left on the wall. Gah!

Second, EE raised prices on most of their stock overnight? Even the stuff that was in stock! Funko Pops for $16.99 that were $9.99-$12.99 yesterday? Fuck off!

And lastly for right now. The filter tore on my coffee machine and I just drank a mouthful of grinds. This day has to get better.

Added: SOTO?! WTF? Learn to hit.

I'm afraid I've ruined my kid... Not really, in the grand scheme of things its a minor thing really. But my son got his SAT scores back today and he's devastated. And its my fault. He's grown up hearing about how I got a 1510 on the SAT 30 years ago and he was convinced he'd do better than me. I tried to warn him the SAT is harder now than it was when I took it - it was 100% multiple choice back in my day, no word problems or free form math answers back then. He got his score back today and he got a 1390 and is crushed I reminded him he was sick the day he took it, he can take it again, but also he wants to go to a University of California school and they don't even accept SAT scores anymore. None of it matters. He needed to equal or better my score and now he's depressed... sigh. Past me ruined my kid.

I'm only a parent to a cat, so not entirely the same, but if it's any consolation, I doubt you ruined your kid. My Dad was an abusive alcoholic, and he never showed even a fraction of the care you seem to show for your son and his future. Comparison is the thief of joy, but we all do it. I think if anything, your son probably wanted to measure up to you, as any kid would, and may have thought your love and approval was tied to his success. Though it seems like a curse now, I do think that what'll be most important to him later on is the fact that you gave him something to strive for. Like you said- tests are meaningless nowadays. We all have off days; I was a terrible test taker, but if I may toot my own horn, I freakin' rocked when it came to just straight-up assignments. Could've been as simple as a bad day, or bad phrasing on the test. There are so many options for success nowadays, and a number on a scoresheet doesn't rule your life. Kudos to you both- to him for taking it, and to you for sticking by him and supporting him so much!

My contribution to the thread? Landlords. Hate 'em. Hate mine for sure. Won't go into too much detail, or else this post would be a mile long, but long story short, my apartment's hot water has been taking forever and a day to heat up, and I'd have better luck becoming an overnight neurosurgeon than getting him or my super to come fix it. If there's two things I need to get the day going and not be a passive-aggressive grump, it's coffee and hot water. I wanna stand in the shower for an absurd amount of time with scalding hot water, and with what I pay in rent, I deserve to, dangit!

My wife and I have talked several times about the idea of investing in a rental property (even during times when it wasn't financially feasible for us to do so, just daydreaming mostly), but I really don't think I have what it takes. I would love to rent to decent people and not gouge, but I also am not super handy so I'd have to pay for any repairs or maintenance etc. And I'd also worry about needing to kick people out if need be, since I know I just don't have it in me, especially if they're in a financial crisis or something.

I dunno... maybe we can go back to not owning property at all? Sharing it the only way to ensure we all have enough? And so on? Too far, is it?

@Ru1977 I think there's a, and I mean no offense here, sweet naivety in this idea of being a benevolent landlord and renting to good people and all that. But let's not kid ourselves about what the intent still is; to buy extra housing in order to force other people to pay you for the privilege of having a place to live. The intent is still hoarding of finite resources that other people need to live with dignity, in order to leverage your ownership of those resources into wealth at the expense of those other people.

Every landlord, no matter how well-meaning or 'innocent,' is engaging with and furthering a system that intentionally deprives people of homes and artificially raises prices out of the reach of the majority. Frankly, no one should be allowed to own more than one home. Period. That's me really letting my lefty-flag fly.

heh, no worries. Like I said, I don't think I have it in me. And really, anytime we get serious about something like that, it's to have somewhere one of her brothers could live to help us pay the mortgage on it, or something for the kids were they to move out eventually. I've never been a landlord, so I can accept I'm naive about it.

Well one of my Detolfs finally shattered on its own. I've seen a lot of stories on social media over the years of this happening and I even loosened all the bolts on mine years ago to help ease the tension on the glass. I was watching TV and heard a weird noise and paused the tv and didn't hear it anymore so I assumed it was the tv. Woke up to find glass shards all on the floor in that room and now that's a whole clean-up process that I didn't want to have to deal with on top of the roof leak I also have to work on today.

Oh man, I'm so sorry! I've never owned a Detolf, so I can't complain, but I know how awful it is to clean up any sort of mess. Just be careful not to cut yourself, and to get it all. Don't need you finding out you missed a piece by having it go through your foot.

I guess another complaint (and total first-world problem) that that leads me to is just the general cleaning of collections in general. I've been going through my stuff recently and finally dusting/cleaning them after way too long. It's been oddly therapeutic, but still quite tedious, and setting everything back up again after has been a pain; you knock one over, they all fall down. I know I should invest in some Detolfs or other covered shelves, then I wouldn't have to worry about it as much, but all the regular excuses apply (time and money and space and moving and all that). It's almost halfway through 2025; we're needlessly sending celebs into space for 11 minutes (another complaint I have)- surely we have the technology for a self-cleaning shelf by now. If litterboxes can do it, why not shelves? :ROFLMAO:

The worst part is I have a small shag rug in the center of that room. That'll be a joy to deal with.

And you really have no idea how dusty your collection is until you give it a good cleaning and suddenly everything is so much more bright and vibrant than it was before. Some of mine is behind glass but a lot of it isn't. The Detolfs have been discontinued (maybe because of this very problem) but they were replaced by something similar (and probably more expensive) but I haven't looked those up yet. The other thing about Detolfs is they aren't dust proof. They eliminate a lot of it, but there is a method people have been using for years to fill in the gaps between the glass of the door and the sides. I just never took the time to do it.

My worst culprits for attracting dust are definitely my Neca figures because so many of them have so much texture. That also makes them harder to clean vs. something like Marvel Legends that I can wipe off with a damp cloth. Neca figures really need water and a toothbrush to get all of that out.

Funny you mention that; I was just thinking yesterday as I was going through some of the figures- "Were these always this color? They look so nice and vibrant!" :ROFLMAO: It threw me for a loop- I didn't think my eyesight was getting that bad! The first company to integrate some sort of stain-proof or dust-proof technology into their plastic is gonna change the world, I tell ya.

The biggest one that surprised me was the old Neca Pamela Voorhees shrine which may be 15 years old at this point. I bought it off ebay and it was already open and had been displayed. I just stuck it on my shelf and one day I was dusting and ran it under the kitchen sink sprayer and scrubbed it with a soft toothbrush and I was amazed. I honestly thought it was basically just gray with almost non-existent colors because the dust wasn't really showing up before.

I suppose some toys are like some movies- they benefit from looking older and imperfect. Cleaning 'em up loses some of that good grit.

New complaint of the day (and one that could also be its own thread, so my apologies)- insurance companies.

My mom's been in declining health the last couple years- arthritis, spinal stenosis, her legs have been giving out, she fell down the stairs and cracked her head open a few years ago which has affected memory and motor function, they found some melanoma last week- you name it, it's happened to her, poor thing. She was getting pretty good healthcare through the state, along with some extra financial help since she's on Disability, but in January they sent her a letter saying they'd no longer cover her medications anymore, and didn't specify why. So she went without all her pain meds for a few months while she found a new provider. Things had been going relatively smoothly until recently, when the new provider sent a notice saying they weren't covering one of her injections for arthritis/bone density because apparently her doctor hadn't sent in the prescription (they had). She's been taking it for years, she needs it to even remotely function (she says it basically helps take her pain levels from like a 95% to a 90%, so not much, but it does help).

The other day, she called up Medicare and explained her financial situation and how the doctor had sent the prescription, and the lady she talked to proceeded to dig into her, denying everything she said and saying that if she had such trouble with her finances and her memory, then she needed to look into a senior care center. My mom called me in tears afterward, saying she hadn't felt so demoralized and embarrassed in decades. She's been quite self-conscious about her memory issues since she had her accident, and, like everyone, is quite scared of getting old, so for this lady to call out both of those things really hit home. Especially from a place that's literally designed to help people in need. She told her doctor all this, and of course they were on her side, and reached out to Medicare themselves to chew them a new one, but my mom got a response back saying that they couldn't figure out which agent she talked to on her phonecall, but they were "sorry for not meeting her expectations". Give me a break. 🙄 I was fuming by the end of her telling me all this too, and I was a split second away from calling myself and getting to the bottom of it, and I would not have been as kind as her doctor was.

Mind you, this is after literal years of trying to get her meds and doctor's visits covered in the first place, since nobody believed she was having these issues until she was basically immobile from them. It had been well over a decade of fighting to get people to believe her and take her seriously, and even then, to get the medication she needed was a whole other saga. My mom's got a bunch of piercings and tattoos- she's in her early 60's, but still dresses kinda punk; point is, she gets singled out way more than she should just because of how she looks. I've lost track of the amount of times she's been pulled aside for "random screening" at the airport, or denied pain meds by a doctor because they think she just wants them to get high.

And it just maddens me to no end that her story is just one of countless, countless stories each day. Hell, I've had to jump through more hoops than I can count for my ADHD meds, and now that I finally got one that works and they agree to cover it, it's completely out of stock everywhere, but I digress. Insurance companies don't care about their clients, flat out, and no one is ever held responsible for saying or doing any of these things.

I’m so sorry to hear that @joshsquash729 . My mom also had a whole suite of medical maladies before she passed. Insurance was a pain in the ass to put it lightly. It’s sad and unjust how many people are denied coverage and then hounded by collection agents when they can’t pay their medical bills. I guess I shouldn’t mention a certain person that shares a name with one of the Mario bros, but…the motivation is relatable.
