Star Trek

There is enough there to like that I am still optimistic. It is the glossy paint on the clothes that is disappointing. But the accessories look impressive. None of this wave are must have characters for me (I ordered half of this wave) so if they get things a bit better by the time Wave 3 with the TOS crew comes out I feel like that will make or break the line.

I dunno, these look far from "dogshit." Maybe they don't meet the high expectations from the promotional photos, but by themselves they're good representations of the characters.

I guess, and I don't mean this as a slight to anyone else, my standards and expectations are a little bit higher.

These look like they'd fit fine in the DST Trek line--from 2005.

These are not 2026 figures. Not in terms of sculpts, paint applications, articulation.

The likenesses are somewhat there, sure, but by no means are they good to great. They're very soft. And I don't necessarily blame that on the sculpts, but the paint is so heavy handed and caked on that you lose something, for sure. Look at the eyebrows, for example.

The face and neck disparity is another thing. Like, that is very noticeable.

Not to mention that those joint cuts are horrible. There are ways they could have added those arm swivels without putting them smack dab in the middle of the bicep. That's certainly not what the renders showed. And the triangular shaped necks to fit the bobbleheads (especially on Archer) shows the lack of foreplanning to integrate the articulation and maintain the sculpts.

These are the things that should have been caught if they had someone monitoring the progress over at the factory level. But they don't.

By the way, he just announced that The Expanse figures have been pushed back, so...clearly we have issues with that factory and live action properties over at Nacelle.

Regardless, I'm willing to be proven wrong. I hope I am. I hope they're just shitty pictures. Again, that's why I say that from what I can see. I had higher hopes. These don't meet them.

I could've been more careful in not sounding like I was shitting on your opinion.

I do have a Sulu ordered from Wave 1, and most of my criticisms will come when it's in-hand.

I don't disagree with a single one of your criticisms. These do not look like 2026 figures.

I just don't think they are as *bad* as dogshit.

I really hope Nacelle is listening and learning fast. Get a better factory STAT! The articulation looks pretty much the same as the renders, though - we never really saw anything but vanilla pose renders, and then vanilla pose protos. The biceps do not look good, though. Aren't these sculpted in 3D so the articulation is there from the start? Or did the factory just not listen?

The Expanse being pushed back AGAIN is insane. I'm so curious what is happening with approvals on that line - but if the licensor is getting prototypes that look like these Trek figures maybe they are doing what we're doing and saying NOPE - try again. Again and again. But that's also a situation where Nacelle knows the figures aren't even in production yet, so waiting so long to give updates is actually becoming the bigger problem.

The OP seemed pretty thrilled... but as you say, everyone has their own expectations.
I doubt I'll keep the Tuvix or Valkris figures. But... I'm not sure that MM Archer will be much better than my decade old AA kit bash. That would be a huge disappointment. I think the paint is what might be the weak point... but I dont have any in my hands yet.

But... of all those pictures... the Weyun looked the best to me! a bit shiny, but it didnt seem to suffer from the difference in paint tones.
Which Honestly is the one I'm most looking forward to.

I don't own any of their product, but I always look at the biker mice. Are these issues only with Star Trek?
So far. And apparently The Expanse, so the lice action stuff.

The first series of Robo Force were pieces of shit that shattered the moment you took them out of package and attempted to move them.

Biker Mice were cool, not without their own issues. Mainly, the articulation felt very outdated and like a second thought. They also oversized the hell out of Modo and severely undersized Vinnie. I actually wouldn't mind a redo of the main three.

But the Moo Mesa figures? They are literally perfection. For a license that they didn't have much faith in, there is some serious love and care placed into them.

I don't have very discerning hands. When you say outdated articulation, what does that mean?
Very clunky, not useful, not very smooth, loose knees. Old Toy Biz style ball hips that actually don't have the greatest movement or range to begin with. Tails that are just one solid hard plastic piece on a ball joint (which makes it difficult to have the BIKER MICE sit on their bikes all the way). The wrists are that McFarlane style ball offering that was unpainted or even cast in the proper color of the wrist bands or gloves, so they stick out like a sore thumb.

When they originally showed them off, they didn't have, I'd say, about 50% of the articulation that they ended up with. Thanks to fan feedback/criticisms--something that I absolutely will credit Nacelle on, their willingness to hear the fans--they went back in and added the articulation.

But the problem is, they didn't start from scratch, they again did the old McFarlane method of cutting the articulation into the sculpts that they already have, and that just does NOT work.

I do love good articulation when playing with figures... but I also have to admit that most of the time I just have my collection in a static display... and most standard Trek uniforms are, well.. uniform so there not a lot of variation... so the lack of good articulation In much of the AA/DST doesn't really bother me so much... but that being said... I recall DST seriously fracking up the buck they used for a lot of the TNG men with legs that didnt bend straight... to the point that I bought a ton of the bucks that had straight legs and re-did the screwed up ones.
I dont want to be doing stuff like that at $30 a figure!

I think articulation should match the characters and their situations. Trek isn't a physical action series so having the crew able to stand around or sit when having discussions on the status of the shields or warp drive is the most likely display for me, which means I prefer clean lines more than articulation.

Anyway, I am hopeful that Nacelle is working out the details...
