Skurge the Executioner BAF Wave

Hey, look who I finally finished

Amazon sporadically marked down WBN, Iron Man, and Phantom Rider over the past week (all the way down to $25!) and FBD agreed to take Spider-man off my hands if I got him, so he's finally complete. Chatsworth for scale.

Now then, let's not do BAFs anymore.

I get it... you guys who only want a specific 30 characters hate the BaF model. Guys like me who absolutely want Armadillo and Xemnu cherish it because we aren't getting those guys any other way.

Zzzax is a figure much more likely to get done as a BaF than as a deluxe release - a wave wher they can offset the costs with some low tool characters like Diamondback.

So I understand why you dislike the baf model but I will always root for it.

I can honestly say as someone who loves random-ass figures in waves, almost every BAF figure wave there's been one character I really didn't want, a couple I really wanted, and a few I'd be like "I didn't know I wanted this guy, but he's cool" and the BAF usually takes the place of the one I didn't want so it's like I got that guy for free. I know I'm weird but that's really worked out for me for many years now. And in almost every BAF wave there's one guy I was iffy on whom I cannot stop playing with and turns out to be a delight.

The one I don't want is another Iron Man about half the time.

EXACTLY. Play it right, you can make money. I get some of you don't want to play, but it's one of the things allowing me to keep collecting these days.

Plus it's an avenue to get more characters for the same amount of money we're already paying.

Obscure BAFs I can understand the allure for. Executioner definitely isn't obscure though.

If I can do my best Scott Steiner for a moment and look at the math here, I paid:

$32 for Warbow (a figure I wanted)
$27 for Enchantress (a figure I wanted)
$27 for Werewolf by Night (probably would've passed on given how he was done)
$26 for Iron Man
$27 for Phantom Stranger (good fodder, but I hardly do any customization anymore)
$32 for Spider-man

Sold Iron Man and Spider man for $15 and $16, respectively. Leaving me with spending $140 for the BAF and two figures I wanted and two figures that are destined for tubs. A $20 figure just for a BAF piece was a lot easier to swallow than a $30 figure.

I do think it was a terrible wave to attach this dude to.

Juggernaut from the X-Men, makes sense.

Armadillo for Spider-Man. Yeah why not.

I don't get this one. Even if it didn't have a BAF I don't understand the wave. Although just now that I say that I don't really get the comic book waves either.

Pro mixed comic waves: gets out cool, odd characters who don't quite fit in the common BAF wave themes (Phantom Rider, Werewolf by Night).

Con mixed comic waves: they're larded up with A-listers (especially this one), and the scattershot character selection means you may be SOL if you love the BAF but don't care about most of the wave.

I really want Skurge, and I really love about half of this wave, but holy crow, I cannot bring myself to buy Ai-Apaec and a random modern Iron Man. Or Warbow, to a lesser extent.

This was just a questionable wave with an unquestionable BAF. The concept is still a good one in my book. It’s the execution ((pardon the pun) that left a lot to be desired.

I passed altogether in favor of rolling the dice on a deluxe release of Executioner down the road. If I lose, I’ll eventually pony up the $100 and get one on eBay. The last thing I need right now is more “inventory”. I’ll pay more to have less if that makes any sense.

Also, and this came directly from the horse’s mouth (Ryan Ting)…one reason we don’t get as many team builders as we used to is because there are less BAF waves which are/were the ideal spot to slot them into.
