NECA 2012 Turtles

Be careful with Shredder once you all get him. He's really fragile. Mine took a dive off my desk, and I thought everything was fine. Just now I noticed his left shoulder armor had snapped off. All of the armor is ABS plastic, the hard stuff. It helps the blades all hold their shape. But since it's all so thin, it's also brittle. One of the blades from his left leg had popped out when I was taking him from the original packaging. I don't know if I'd have preferred PVC plastic that would eventually wilt, but this guy is covered in a bunch of stuff that could very easily break off. Don't know if I love that trade.

I'm glad I went for two of them, because one of mine is completely missing one of his gauntlet blades. Not in the box, not on my floor, just...never attached.

Norm I know you have like 6 more in reserve in the closet. Just pull one of those out.

Mystery FedEx package showed up today. Twas the rest of my Walmart order--Donnie and Mikey.

Meaning NECA still needs to send out my second set of Raph, Leo, and Donnie.

My mystery NECA labeled box arrived today, and it was my Walmart Shredder.
I'm not going to correct anyone about attaching the incorrect tracking number to my order, which forced me to file a claim because I assumed it was mis-delivered. Walmart and NECA can take the "L" on that one.
He is an imposing figure, exactly what the Playmates version SHOULD have been back then.
Still no movement on my other 3 turtles, but hopefully soon since they've been in stock on Walmart again.

Tiger Claw looks good. I want to see Slash though, they already hinted at him at SDCC with his spiked mace hidden in the display.

Oh, they showed the digital sculpt, too. There was a Turtle toy panel, and they showed him, Splinter, and Casey. I think they said he'll be 7.5 or 8 inches tall.

If it’s any consolation, even though you can still order these turtles from Walmart, they aren’t shipping immediately. Mine are scheduled for a couple of weeks out

I ordered a lone movie Mikey plus the Archie Wingnut from Walmart and I'm curious if NECA ships those before they ship me my 2012 set I ordered through them. If I had to place a wager, I'd guess the Walmart orders go through first.

Just saw that these figures are still up for grabs at Walmart. I don’t think I’ll be grabbing them since I never watched the 2012 show and have absolutely no attachment to these iterations of the turtles or their figures. But I do have a question for my fellow TMNT collectors out there regarding this particular series: Why is it that the speculative market isn’t fawning over these like previous incarnations of the TMNT?I thought this was the hit show that everyone fawned over while it was on the air? I still remember when the Revotech versions of these turtles came out and people lost their god damned minds. Now it feels like you could hear a pin drop before these Neca figures sold out.

In my circle, it's age gap.

Collectors tend to be older, and it's the 80s and 2003 (When a lot of '80s babies would have been in their twenties and still into stuff because this was the serious BTAS-Mirage accurate show at the time) were the big ones.

2012 was 3D which turned a lot of people off. 2012 is just for a different generation. A lot of my 19-23 year-old classmates (admittedly mostly women) love the 2012 version because they found it on streaming. It's their iconic turtle next to the recent movie. They adore everything about it.

And even then they're not excited about the figures. They're too busy doing fan art and they just want stickers and prints from artist alley. And, crucially, it also isn't a gateway to the rest of turtles. Old show. Mirage or IDW. There's very little transition to other media or history. It's something I see a lot of with the The Youth.

A lot of other nerds my age (early 40s) or older I know missed the show and most of the nostalgia is for the older material. Hell, look at the love Archie gets.

Like all my anecdotal observations, I'm basing this off of my local conversations with everyone I interact with it that has some sort of horse in these races.

So yeah, even in my local collector circle the 2012 line feels like there is no interest, and everyone is still waiting for Archie and the '80s cartoon line to just reboot itself and update all the figures again.

Simply put: over-saturation.

Think about it:

Playmates, NECA, Super7, McFarlane, Loyal
Subjects, Hasbro, Mattel, Mety Toyz, Mezco Toyz, Heat Boys, Mondo...everyone has had their hand in the TMNT cookie jar and there is no shortage of options for your Turtles needs or wants.

They're selling well. But the enthusiasm isn't there because...well...everything is to be expected. Oh, another Turtle line? Cool.

Not to mention, the NECA stuff has been easier and easier to come by. FOMO is no longer there, because the exclusivity really died off. Especially as the COVID Collectors have moved on to other things or lost interest.

COVID Collectors, for the uninitiated, were the people who were sat at home during COVID, bored, and only started collecting as a means to alleviate boredom and start a new hobby. Which is fine, but it wasn't done in earnest. It created a massive shortage in lines we normal collectors were able to snag, an artificial scarcity, and *massive* FOMO because we had irregular competition. The two main lines that suffered from this the most were GI Joe Classified (which was already having distribution issues at that time, especially for Cobra Island offerings) and NECA Turtles. A lot of these assholes weren't truly collectors, in it for the love of the hobby, they only viewed it as a financial investment.

But now that they're gone, and NECA has gotten a broader license for release...things have been easier to grab, thus not this fervor for the hunt.

I’m sure a lot of scalpers got burned by NECA. Look at most of the Loot Crate figures from round 2 - those things were plentiful. Same with Super7. Production numbers went up, reissues are common, and 2012 is just not the 87 series in terms of popularity and nostalgia.

I think it's a combination of what altcunningham and RickNerdsLife mention.

When 2012 TMNT came out, it has been a few years since the previous show, 2k3, aired. So there was interest in having a new TMNT show. It seemed like it had been a while. The turtles themselves in the toyline didn't quite match the show's artwork. Revoltech figures finally came out but they were almost too stylized. Those figures actually got marked down at places. They only shot up in the aftermarket after a while and after TMNT merchandise started becoming hot again. Especially for collectors.

There may not a ton of buzz for the NECA 2012 TMNT figures, because there's a ton of other collector product for the brand. NECA's putting out 87 and 90 movie stuff which is benefiting from folks nostalgic for that media also have disposable income to spend on that nostalgia. There's also a lot of import turtle stuff hitting, which again that crowd may be going after. The audience who grew up with the 2012 show may not quite be at an age where they have disposable income to throw at nostalgia items. They haven't quite gotten far enough in age where something from their childhood is appealing to them.

We've had an explosion in TMNT collector product over the last few years. We're probably getting at a saturation point where none of it will quite stand out and become THE line to get. So many niches being filled that maybe nothing really stands out.

And I just had some of this line arrive from NECA. A recap of my ordering history:

9/28 -Ordered three figures from NECA (Raph wasn't available, didn't get Shredder).
10/7 -Got a notice my order had been delivered but it was to the wrong address. I don't think that was even my order (or not full one anyway) as dimensions were for only 1 figure.
10/7 -Got a refund from WM.
10/7 -Reordered my original order.
10/8 -Made a separate order for Raph when he became available.
10/13 -Just received my original order of 3 (order date on included invoice is 10/6 doesn't make sense for the re-order, so this must be my original order showing up. Which I already got refunded.
10/13 -Also received a lone Leo, who must be from the reorder of 3. Order date is 10/9.
-Order numbers and dates on included invoices don't match anything from WM's order pages.
-Two, non-refunded, orders (10/7 and 10/8) are still listed as preparring on WM site and not listed as shipped.

Gonna give it a few more days to see what else shows up before trying to return any duplicates. I may end up getting duplicates of my original order of 3. Or maybe my ordered Raph becomes the delivered Leo. Sigh. This is so wacky.
