McFarlane DC Multiverse

I got the Platinum discount with an additional $20.00 coupon at MTS. Sprung for FedEx delivery and still came out well below retail. Around $66.00 and change. I do like this Mongul better than the original, but this Superman is a drop dead must have for me.

I didn't get the Superman/Mongul 2 pack today. It looks cool, but I just didn't feel like I had to have it. But I got on when it went up for pre order, because I'm half an idiot. I thought some of those single figures revealed like Tim Drake and bronze Tiger went up today. I don't know why that was in my head, but I was wrong lol.

My understanding is that a variant cover (perhaps the one on the included card) is the particular loophole being exploited here.
DC has to pay to use the likenesses in the comics, too, so I don't think they're ever too close to Jack. (In Batman '66, Gordon looks noticeably off-model because his likeness wasn't in the package deal, for example.) I'm pretty sure that like Mattel before them, they can just make a generic Joker as long as the likeness isn't too close.

Man, $80 seems a little steep for that Superman / Mongul 2-pack. That makes them $40 each (or Supes $30 and Mongul $50) either way, it's more than the single figures usually go for.
I'd assume it hits discount like most overpriced McFarlane sets. Was anyone asking for this pairing or these looks? Recovery suit seems the most likely to be wanted, but not with that same head for $40.

I would love to hear the real story behind that shift, because in addition to the lower production runs, that’s when the rampant and often indiscriminate reuse began. The obvious answer would be that the line wasn’t performing well, and there would seem to be some anecdotal evidence of that. I’ve been collecting for nearly 30 years, and when a line walks like a lame duck and quacks like a lame duck, it’s usually a lame duck, but then why pursue renewing the license? Was running a quasi-budget line with premium prices and lower production runs working? Given the pre-order sellouts, maybe it was, but at the same time, I still see DC Multiverse product languishing on the shelves at big box retailers and local comic and toy stores.
If I were to play archaeologist at my EB, the turning point was the wave with Hazmat suit Batman. The regular and the light up. And then there's another strata you can track with the caveman Batman and Batgirl wave.

Hazmat still exists on the shelves, and it was shortly after that if you weren't pre-ordering you probably weren't going to get the cool characters. And then there was another adjustment with that caveman wave, and really unless you pre-order, you're probably not going to see anything. They will get some overflow on the shelves like the Silver age Batgirl, but that product will move within the week. All the older stuff still hangs.

This is strictly Canada and I see this mirrored in other EBs and just watching our online etailers.

My personal theory that still extends to this very moment is part of the problem is many people at EB will pre-order multiple copies in the hopes of getting a platinum, and then they get stuck with a bunch of crap nobody wants because they don't really deter that setup. Just today when I was picking up a game, someone called and wanted six jokers and four Lobos and I heard him demand that any platinums be set aside for him.

After he hung up, the clerk told me they absolutely don't do that... Except they have done it for me, but I ask nicely and usually only get one.
