Mattel Jurassic Park Lines

Target put up the new wave for pre-order. We get 2 of the previously revealed dinos, as well as the Sinoceratops, which is new. They're moving to interchangeable parts for it too, which is cool; a nice middle ground of not having articulated jaws. Looks like the smaller dinos lost their glass eyes in favor of the painted ones again, which is a bit of a bummer, but not necessarily a dealbreaker.

May grab the Sino; the other two look cool, but since I'm sticking to movie-only dinos (or trying to), I may hold off unless they really look good in person.

I finally found the Hammond Collection Spinosaurus! Back at the normal price, and I had a $10 off coupon. Psyched to finally get this Spino. The colors are so distinctive on this dinosaur.

The Spino really is a beauty to behold. The colors pop, the sculpt is great, articulation really well done. It's great at full price, let alone with a coupon, so congrats, Akatsuki!

Not Mattel, but Nanmu just announced they're working on a hyper detailed, articulated Spino as well. Probably gonna be on the smaller side, and definitely more expensive, but might be worth it for some. I'm a sucker for Spino, so might consider it; I had their non-articulated Spino before the Hammond one, and it was lovely.

Did the Rebirth Duncan figure ever end up coming out? I just realized today that I've never seen him in stores, but I'd still like to have him. All the usual sites have had him on pre-order for a while, with the date getting pushed back continuously. Has anyone actually seen him in stores, or is it possible he got cancelled?

Oh wow, been a while since this thread got any action, huh?

Anyway, saw this today and I think I might pick him up. I don't have any interest in these movies anymore, but I like some of the aggressively unreal dino designs. I still really like the deluxe indoraptor I grabbed a while back. And look, another company packing in a drool effect! Let's fucking go. That's the kind of stuff I like.

There's a couple new reveals they showed off on Collect Jurassic's Instagram- Scorpius Rex, Indominus Rex, the Mutadon from Rebirth, the Rebirth Dilophasaurus, a Hypsilophodon, and apparently a 1:1 scale Aquilops. Scorpius, Indominus, and Mutadon all look pretty dang good. Don't think I need another Dilophosaurus, I don't do the extended universe dinos, and I don't really need a 1:1 scale Aquilops, but it's cool that the line is branching out a bit! There's still a lot of life left in it, it seems.

Yeah, the sculpts on the "real" dinos feel a little spongy to me, but the fictional guys I think look pretty nice (largely because I don't care much about them being accurate tot he films), and I can see myself grabbing one or two as generic background monsters. I actually really like the mutadon design, as silly as it is.

Professor Rottclaw’s gonna get a menagerie out of these.
Yeah I'm gonna have a really hard time not picking that guy up. I've been so good resisting going deep into Classified but the weirder they get the harder it is. I avoided Crocmaster. I avoided the Mole Rats. I even avoided the guy wiht the giant scorpion pet. But the dino doc might finally end me. And yeah, these are -perfect- fodder for him.

I really dig how weird the Mutadon is too. Might even pick up two of them to display each of the wing types, and since there were at least 2 in the movie (shame we never really got a fully good look at them).

The little chunk you can take off of Indominus with the little tracker is a nice touch. Reminds me of the old battle damage chunk gimmick on the old JP toys where you could see the ribs. Never really cared for it as a gimmick, but it still brings back memories.

Scorpius Rex is oddly the one I'm probably looking forward to most. The animated shows were a guilty pleasure of mine (while still being kinda good?), and Scorpius itself was just kind of a freaky goblin dude. I wouldn't mind getting the Indoraptor eventually, but I'm glad they went with Scorpius first, since it was the predecessor. Kinda crazy, too, that it took us this long to get a drool accessory. Really adds some "oomph" to the figure. I can't wait to see how people take it and make it into something inappropriate too.

Yeah, the Scorpius is probably my favorite of the bunch. It'll depend on final pricing if I grab more than that. What scale is this line? The hyper articulated Indoraptor from years ago was roughly 1/12 scale (or, at least, seemed to look fairly close next to my ML, maybe a *smidge* big). I still sometimes think maybe I should try to pick up the Nanmu Indoraptor too as the detailing was so slick, but it seemed real small int he reviews I saw.

I never watched any extended JP media and still haven't seen the most recent 2 films. The writing on them is so bad that I just wait for a rainy day when they're on streaming to catch up and mostly tune out when dinosaurs aren't eating people. But I do love a goofy pseudo dino design. I still wish they'd do an updated swing at the old Chaos Effect toys.

Regarding pricing, at the very least, Hammond Collection stuff tends to go on sale fairly often. The only time I think I didn't see it go on sale was for the Spino (maaaybe I did once?) but that's because it sold through pretty quickly.

As for scale, I'm not entirely sure, but I wanna say the line is 1:18. They're made to scale with the humans, who are all 3.75". Forgive me- I'm not sure how invested in the line you've been, but just in case (or for anyone else who's curious), there's so far been about 4-ish sizes/price points for the dinos:

Small, which are things like Raptors, Pachy, Gallimimus, etc.- they run about $15.
Medium, which are things like the Triceratops, Para, etc., which run about $30
Large, which are the Carno, Allo, etc., and run about $40
Extra large, which are T-Rex, Spino, Giga, etc., which have run from like $50-$75, depending.

If these new releases are comparable to older releases, I see Scorpios most likely being a large. I've seen different size charts say different things, and it doesn't help that it already has weird proportions- long hind legs, stubby snout, hunched spine, etc. Most charts I see say it's roughly between the Indoraptor and Indominus. It's probably comparable to a Parasaurolophus, depending on how it carries itself. Just to be safe, and given the extra parts, I'd say Large is probably the most likely. I see the Mutadon being a medium release, and the Scorpios is definitely bigger than the Mutadon. Plus, Mattel seems to like to give us at least one release in each category each time, and that would fit.

I still have the old hyper-articulated Indo too. It's a surprisingly nice figure, and holds up pretty well. It's not to HC standards, obviously, but the articulation isn't thaaat different. I'd imagine the inevitable HC release would be comparable, just without the kinda slick, smooth rain effect on the scales. Holding out for the HC version is why I haven't sprang for Nanmu either, but she does look pretty nice. Their JP3 Raptors have been perhaps the most tempting.

Super helpful info, thanks. I haven't been following the lines at all, I just know JP scaling is all over the place depending on what you're picking up. I know they had that gargantuan T-Rex not long ago that was basically 1/12 scale even though it had hardly any articulation. I was still tempted by it just because, giant T-Rex... I mean come on.

You think HC is a higher standard than the original hyper articulated Indo? Interesting. From these pics they seem in the same ballpark, but I haven't handled anything but the Indo, which for the price at the time (I know it was under $40, maybe $25 or $30?) it was excellent. Though maybe I'm romanticizing my Indo a bit. That endorsement makes me more interested in the Scorpius then. And since it's a larger dino in canon I assume it'd scale close to the Indo I have. As long as it feels like it works next to a ML or Classified I'm sure it'll suit me fine.

Either way I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for them. Throw a pseudo dino out there with thumbs or a weird body plan and I'm going to pay attention.

Hammond Collection is basically the Black Series or Legends of the JP line- take that as you will. The quality is much better than the basic figures (though still with its fair share of issues, and things they can never seem to make their mind up on. Also, the likenesses on some of the humans are atrocious- Claire from JW being the worst- but I doubt many collect the line for the humans anyway.) But in terms of mass market releases, they're definitely the best. The plastic (mostly) feels nice and strong, the tails are all bendy-wires, the joints (again, mostly) are pretty sturdy. Especially as the line has gone on, and they've started to fix some of the earlier issues, like oversized foot claws on the Raptors, weirdly placed bottom jaws, replacing painted eyes with glass ones, etc.

But they're definitely collector focused, for the dino nerds that care about accuracy. If you just want a fun, cheap dino figure on your shelf, and don't care about articulation or hollow plastic or anything, then for sure stick with the basic ones. All the lines are pretty well priced, all things considered. Something for everyone, really.

I think the 1/12 T-Rex you're referring to is the Super Colossal one. They're huge- about the size of a small kid, and hollow, so you can stick all your little mini dinos down inside it. They've made a couple- T-Rex, Blue, Spino, and a couple others. They're tempting, for sure, but obviously take up a huge amount of room.
