Mattel DC Figures

I'm happy to have the DCUC Killer Moth and the DC Collectibles animated Klarion and Teekl figures (came with an Etrigan the Demon) in my display. I generally don't love animated figures, but the Klarion one has worked for me. I would love to see these characters revisited by either McFarlane or Mattel at some point.
I do remember that set now that you mention it. I need to track that down, especially since it’s the animated version of Klarion that I’m most familiar with.

That’s why I specified “classic” Captain Boomerang. 😉

Is it true that DCUC going with that version of Captain Boomerang was a Geoff Johns “Executive Order”?

Also, I think there may have been a Weather Wizard or a Top in Mattel’s short lived 3.75” line.

Yes, it's weird to me that he's never been made by any of DCD, Mattel or McF. I have a 3.75" figure of him from Mattel from their Infinite Heroes line that was out around the same time as DCUC, but nothing in a larger scale. He's a want.

Also, I think there may have been a Weather Wizard or a Top in Mattel’s short lived 3.75” line.

Weather Wizard, yes. Top, no. I still have that entire collection. I bought them ALL for some reason. I was collecting those around the same time that Hasbro was doing their own 3.75" Marvel Universe line that they tried and failed to replace Marvel Legends with.

Here's a link to a checklist for the line but it doesn't have pictures for all:

I don't know if that was executive order, but that being the Boomerang look at that time and him getting a resurgence of focus from Brightest Day probably made it seem like a sensible choice. I actually like the longshoreman look for him quite a bit -- Boomer having a darker-toned look for stealth, skulking, and cowardice fits him well -- although I'd love to also have a classic one.

Unfortunately the disparities between Rogue Boomer and Suicide Squad Boomer require some difficult choices to be made. At least that’s what I chalk it up to.

Even before he became CCO and co President of DC, Johns was a powerful man in DC. Having unspecified editorial and creative responsibilities. Even as much as I enjoy his work, he’s reputedly not a nice guy. Particularly on the Hollywood side of things. It makes sense that Neitlich would toady up to him. It’s funny (not amusing funny) to me how that Deputy Lantern wave got made. It’s so terrible.

It was a bad wave attempting to tie into the popular crossover at the time, a crossover that had demonstrated success as a figure line through DCD. It was just a misread of the DCUC audience, although I'm guessing they were also trying to play ball with retail after sticking them with tons of pegwarmers for years. Nothing more dramatic than that.

I kind of love(d) the Infinite Heroes line. They were fun toys.

Is it true that DCUC going with that version of Captain Boomerang was a Geoff Johns “Executive Order”?

Here's what I can tell you. Back in 2011, a friend and I made the trip from Southern to Northern California to go to WonderCon, which was held in San Francisco at the time. The big reason we went was mostly because of Mattel. They actually had a decent sized presence there.

We were talking to a nice guy named Bill Benecke who was a designer for the company (I don't know if Bill is still with them or not. I hope he is. He's very cordial and real easy to talk to. He's usually very forthcoming with information). Anyway, my friend and I asked, as politely as we were able, why Captain Boomerang wasn't in his classic costume so he could fit in with the Flash Rogues and the Suicide Squad, instead of being in a look that he wore for exactly 15 minutes in the comics. Bill's answer was "Well, that was as a favor to somebody". He just gave us a smile. We didn't need to say anymore, we knew who the favor was for.

That's when I knew that classic fans were well and truly screwed. DCUC was now officially a Geoff Johns tribute line. That drive back to San Diego was the longest 10 hours of my entire life.

And then at that year's SDCC it was announced that the Geoff Johns tribute line was no longer going to be available at retail, it was going to be good ol' Matty Collector only. Or Club Matty or whatever the fuck they called it.

And again, the trolley ride from downtown San Diego to my house out in the suburbs was the longest ride of my life.

And let me tell you something else that's even MORE depressing: DCUC was NOT cancelled at retail due to sales. Sales were fine. The line was selling so well that Wal-Mart was still asking for exclusive waves. No, DCUC got cancelled due to the stupidity of Warner Brothers Consumer Products and DC Comics. DC was getting ready to launch their "New 52" you see, and that's what they wanted to promote at retail. "Classic" anything was no longer in the cards. So that was that.

Oh, the irony. Imagine if DCUC had been going strong all this time. Think about where we would be with the Legion, with the Titans, with the JSA. How sad. The much vaunted "New 52" is now long gone. DCUC died for nothing.

So now Mattel and DC have a second chance. Hasbro has kept Marvel Legends going for 20 years. DC and Mattel can do the same thing provided they can keep from shooting themselves in the foot.

Like his executive order that the Legion figures couldn’t have flight rings on their middle finger as this was reserved for Lanterns.
