Mattel DC Figures

When a rogue AI built from abandoned Bat-computing prototypes starts executing global catastrophes by manipulating overlooked metahumans, only the heroes who live in the margins can move undetected to stop it.

Enter... The Outliers:

Ragman

Looker

Nemesis (Tom Tresser)

Black Condor

Nightshade

Line-killer wave to get all of these weirdos at once, but these five would actually be awesome picks for Mattel. Each of them contributes to a team/ subtheme (Suicide Squad, Outsiders, Freedom Fighters, Shadowpact), and each of them has a cool, toyetic look.

Yeah, even as a comic I'd want Grayson or Harley there to anchor some sales.
I love the lineup, but yeah, I'd also want a fun character in there to be more of the team wild card. Harley in that role is probably too obvious, but that and her popularity are the reasons so many team books want her on the roster. Just like with Deadpool.

Also, Nightshade & Nemesis is one of my favorite comic book side character romances so I'd like to see them on a team again.

…and the idea that only 3-5 of them are the iconic versions of new characters that fans have actually been asking for is even more incredible. 😛

Sorry. It IS an impressive body of work, but I couldn’t resist. 😉
Honestly, I don't know enough to have a frame of reference for this. Is this about any characters in particular?

I was perusing my DC shelves to see which DC Direct figures remain tucked away in there...
Aqualad
Speedy
Ravage
Max Mercury
Impulse
Tomorrow Woman
Hourman (Matthew Tyler)
Vandal Savage
Mordru
Indigo 1
Arkiss Chummuck (because I could never track down Todd's).
G'Nort
Salakk
Kryb
Red Lantern Guy Gardner
Red Lantern Mera

I didn't pick up the DCD Legion because they were too 'old timey' for me and still didn't do my favorites - Dawnstar and Tyroc

Perfect bait team. Ragman and Nightshade mean everything to me. Nemesis is my little bro's favorite. Realistically though, I could see this being a good spread of weirdos for a 100-150 figure year.

Yeah... what the new DC line really needs is those weird, outlier characters that no one would see coming. Like.. ~checks notes~ Superman.

Okay but if we put Superman in a diaper, that's for a pretty niche audience.

I did not realize they also had a romance. We're about to have a love triangle drama with Ragman.

Yeah, the Ostrander/Yale Squad run had a bit of a love triangle with Nightshade, Nemesis, and Rick Flag Jr., although much less soapy than most triangles like that. It's more like intersecting character arcs that eventually end with the two characters that allowed themselves emotional growth together while the one who didn't instead opts for multiple acts of self-immolation disguised as duty. Squad is so beyond most comics it's hard to even process sometimes. (Incidentally, James Gunn's version of Flag reads way more like Nemesis to me, but he also managed to write Peacemaker in two entirely separate ways from movie to show, so.)

That was just me throwing shade at Hasbro for the versions of Namorita, Justice, Damion Hellstrom, and the Owl (just to name a few) that they elected to go with. It’s been a great ride overall, but when one of “your” characters finally get their shot and you have to do a google search to figure out where Hasbro got the costume reference from, it’s a little disenchanting.

Does it have the word "Superman" on the package? It's not an outlier.

Huh, interesting. The only Justice appearances I've ever read were from the Busiek Avengers and I thought that's what the figure was from. Owl looked pretty much like I expected him to look, but I really only know him well from the Waid Daredevil run.

Maybe in a Superman sub-line. I just don’t see “Superman by Gaslight” as a wave anchor.

I love all this Elseworldy stuff so I’d be happy if he got made at all.

IT'S SUPERMAN. Of course it's a wave anchor. There are more Superman fans out there who'll say, "Oh, that's a cool version, I should pick this up" about pretty much any Superman variant than there are fans of pretty much any B-list or below character.

You know what was a wave anchor? Superman Red & Blue. And people HATED that era. But it's still Superman and they still bought those figures.

Justice League basically will be the "Superman" subline, I don't expect them to make many dedicated Superman waves. We're in an era where the latest Marvel Legends Spider-Man waves are anchored by fucking Spider-Boy, Spider-Man Unlimited, Spider-Shot, Last Stand Spider-Man and Uncanny Spider-Man. I think Gotham by Gaslight Supes would be fine.

I hope so. I really enjoyed the original Gotham by Gaslight and the follow up series were seriously fantastic. It’s a really interesting setup for some continuing stories.
