Mattel DC Figures

That's why I've been so excited for the prospect of Mattel DC, I just want the options. Having these massive spanning universes of characters in active circulation at various pricepoints is the dream for any large toyline. Cheap spot fillers for big names I'm not passionate about or insanely obscure ones I'd never get otherwise is all I could ask for. I'd happily welcome something like this with Marvel Legends as well.

And in the case of WWE, sometimes the headsculpts/prints of the budget toys have been better than and also compatible with the more premium offerings. I'm a sucker for headswaps anyways.

I've always been fairly privy to buying "budget" toys. I liked those Lanard Predator figures well enough, I enjoyed the 4 inch Spinmaster DC figure I got, and I haven't bought any but I find the WWE basics very charming as well whenever I see them on shelves. Out of these examples, they have the most impressive selection. If DC can build something up like WWE Basics over the years and be compatible with the standard lines, I'll pick up quite a few. Hell, I'd probably have gotten a couple of the Mcfarlane Retro figures if they just had ball hips.

This is all a huge "if" though, Mattel has to prove themselves and build up some trust for DC.

My only concern about this is that the Basic WWE figures are pretty ass, except for the heads, which look good swapped onto the Elite or Ultimate figures, so it'd be sad if certain characters were relegated to that line only. I'll be in for the Elite/Ultimate equivalent figures though depending on how they scale with ML. I have a few of the McFarlane figures but I really don't like them.

Yeah, this is my concern as well; Mattel being like 'well, Vigilante doesn't really deserve the GOOD figure, so we'll make a basic figure and then never think about him ever again.'

I don’t collect WWE. Haven’t watched wrestling on a regular basis in over a decade. But I like this approach if this is indeed where they’re going with it. The main thing for me is that it is one continuous, consistent line that goes back to 2015. Even bigger is that it all scales. Figures, playsets, accessory packs, vehicles, all of it. That is a massive big deal for me and something I’ve wanted for DC since DCD started up. Marvel has been at it since 2000 with Marvel Legends. In that time DC has gone from Hasbro to Mattel, Mattel to McFarlane, and McFarlane back to Mattel. With DCD/DCC running parallel from 1998 to 2020. With Todd taking that over in 2022. Marvel has built a Universe in plastic. DC has a bunch of scales, styles, and form factors of the same characters over and over and over again. If Mattel can offer more stability and BUILD THE FUCKING UNIVERSE in the same fashion as they have with the WWE, then I’m all for it.

Having said all that, I’m probably still done when Todd is. I don’t think I have it in me to start over. Some people can just collect a specific character, usually Batman, Superman, or Spider-Man. That’s not me. Never has been. There are some unrelated personal issues as well as I edge towards retirement. A new action figure line probably isn’t the best place for my disposable income. But we’ll see. Mattel just might overwhelm me. Who knows?
