Marvel Legends Two-Packs

Like anything it really depends on who's writing him. As I think he was a priest recently in the books, plus he's often shown going to confession, plus his mother was a nun whom he'd visit quite often. I think it has more to do with how heavy handed the writer wants to go with it at any given time. Even Nightcrawler gets that as he's had some pretty ruthless and eyebrow-raising moments in the comics in the last decade, and I'd argue he's traditionally more in tune with his faith as both his emotional support system and worldview, while Daredevil struggles against it at times, being a vigilante and all.

Murdock is moreso one of those "did I do more good than bad," Catholics a lot of the time, whereas I think Nightcrawler is more tapped into the metaphysical aspects of certain things being beyond his control, which is why he's happier overall than Matt.
 
As with anything that passes through the hands of man, it's going to be a mixed bag and exploited for personal interest. French Huguenauts were pretty ruthless too as were the protestant British monarchs. Most of the time throughout history it was under the guise as supporting the nation state, which ironically, during Krakoa and directly after, is when Nightcrawler had his more "off the rails" moments.

Matt has always seemed like his religion is something he was born with and wont leave out of devotion to it, regardless of how well it is/isn't working for him at the moment.

Kurt has always seemed like it's a better fit, possibly because just on the basis of appearance he's had to come to terms with the prospect that no one may love him but God. In that regard every person who is willing to give him a chance is a friend he's happy to have and likely values more than most.
 
Most People:
  • Do not live in a mansion
  • Don't have dozens of in-person friends
  • Cannot do a backflip
  • Would seriously hurt themselves if they tried to handle a cutlass
  • Don't have awesome blue skin or a tail
  • Cannot teleport
Nightcrawler:
  • Should probably stop complaining
  • Although admittedly has a complicated relationship with his parents, one of whom seemed to be his mom but is apparently his dad and was definitely also Sherlock Holmes
 
I mean there is also the whole “obvious member of massively oppressed demographic, has an appearance that the most nutso and violent people on the planet* think represents ultimate evil” thing which is a MASSIVE set of obstacles, though . . .

*and also people who are not nutso and violent
 
Jeez, it's a shame he's not part of a team that regularly hops dimensions and travels to space and has a supersonic jet and owns a full academy in Westchester County where they all live in a mansion.

Full disclosure, I don't think the X-Men are a super great metaphor for oppressed and vulnerable populations. Most of those don't have eye lasers.

Hah! Accurate. I didn't go to a Catholic school but I've known a lot of people who did. An old friend of mine likes referring to himself as a "lukewarm Catholic" and I always liked that.

Pretty much every issue of Daredevil written before Frank Miller’s Born Again storyline and by any writer who strives above writing cliche plot devices like Matt Murdock’s one dimensional piety.

That’s fair, but that’s also the point of the fiction: a *power* fantasy.

If we are to accept the “universe” as it is, narrative flaws notwithstanding, Kurt has serious ongoing trauma and discrimination issues regardless of his power set and resources.

This always bothered the shit out of me as well. Like if being basically super flexy Kevlar works when it's just hitting him flat in the chest or whatever, but doing the little cape move? Nah.

I've always used "escaped Catholic" for myself and sum it up with "all the guilt, none of the salvation" to the tune of "tastes great, less filling."

Yeah, the kevlar suit itself doesn't bug me TOO much, but the flappy flap of cloth he's using to both blind himself and protect his face felt overused in the last film and a half. But I'm not a physicist nor an assassin.

It's poetically cliche but I have some friends who are generationally wealthy and live in mansions and don't worry about anything and they are the most miserable people I know for various reasons.

Proving once and again only toy collectors know how to make money work with happiness.
