Last Movie Watched

I'll have to check that one out. If Celtic Woman did a cover, he may like it- he's a big fan of Loreena McKennitt. I definitely gotta show him the old Rankin Bass specials- those never lose their charm.
 
The Boyo and I just got back from One Battle After Another, and we....didn't care for it. 😅 I don't quite know how to put it, but it just didn't connect. It didn't feel mean-spirited exactly, but maybe....a bit too timely and real? I don't think it quite knew if it wanted to treat certain things as serious or funny. Leo's character was totally passive the whole time- was really hoping for some sort of redemption for him, but...nah. Sean Penn gave a great performance, but man, what a scumbag. Didn't really find myself rooting for anyone and left feeling uncomfortable. And maybe that's the point? I don't know.

I definitely feel like maybe I missed something- I see all this praise for it, and I feel like something maybe went over my head? I feel like I got what they were going for, it just didn't land with me. Don't get me wrong- it's a totally competently made movie. Maybe I'm just not smart enough for the likes of Paul Thomas Anderson. 😅

I'll tell him you said so! He'll be thrilled to hear someone else likes her. He actually just got back from a trip to Canada to see her. He's actually pretty close with her assistant, and helped usher some of her concerts this past week and hung out with her briefly backstage. He's met her a handful of times and says she's very personable, especially to folks in Stratford, where she lives. The one time I met her she was lovely. She's become a bit of a running joke with us, though- since she's so outwardly sweet, we've naturally turned her into a chain-smoking, deep-voiced cockney woman when discussing her. As you do.
 
"The Mummer's Dance" has stuck with me ever since "Ever After." I just put it on right now. :)

Love Actually has FANTASTIC music and I think that's part of its magic. Craig Armstrong's score gets me EVERY TIME - the "Glasgow Love Theme" and especially the "PM's Love Theme" are beautiful, emotional pieces that stir me - and I'm guessing a lot more. Olivia Olson's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" is better than Mariah's to me - the crack in her voice! Hugh dancing to "Jump (For My Love)" is just joyful. "Christmas Is All Around" put Bill Nighy on a LOT of Christmas song playlists - and it's also just a great movie song. It's hard not to sing along.

That's already five CLASSIC bits to me. Plus, Emma Thompson's breakdown to Joni Mitchell, Kelly Clarkson's song and The Beach Boys song bringing it home - I think it endures because it is almost a musical.

Also, Martine McCutcheon's red coat/costume was on display recently at AMC - my two thoughts were, in this order: "That's in great shape and also she IS so tiny!" Movie = :rolleyes:

I have always refused to see "The Duff" because it's main premise is Mae Whitman is either fat or unattractive - I don't know which is accurate, because fuck that, Hollywood.

Stunning visuals, as expected, but honestly, the storyline is just rinse and repeat. It starts off really slow, but with a nearly 3 1/2 movie time, not a surprise, but it just seems like we've seen all this before. The new Navi antagonist is pretty cool, though.

I put on Sherlock a few weeks ago. It was awful. Don't do it. It's not worth it. You could jump naked into a pile of thumbtacks or something and have a better time.
 
I'm always six months to a year behind on movies but watched the Northman yesterday. I recognize the beautiful film craft involved, but I kept finding myself thinking "honestly, for my money, if I'm going to watch Viking fan fiction, I prefer the Vikings show a lot more."
