My older boy (18) went with friends on Friday night, and my younger boy (13) went on Saturday. They both liked it, the younger more. It does what it's supposed to, be entertaining to a certain demographic, and it does it well.

As you know, I watched Tombstone with my older boy. He enjoyed it, and I always enjoy it.
 
I finally saw Top Gun Maverick. Not sure what all the fuss was about. Generally speaking it was a carbon copy of the first Top Gun with some different actors. You could almost go scene by scene. I felt embarrassed watching it.
 
I watched The Gorge last night. A pretty uneven production of a really neat idea.

The premise and backstory are rock solid and the monsters are (mostly) creepy and gross, but the pacing and inclusion of a love story really kept me from enjoying it as much as I thought I would. Like, I think it should've built up to a final excursion to/escape from the gorge rather than making that the middle third. The ending just felt really underwhelming and convenient.
 
I just finished watching Masters of the Universe. The last time I saw it was as a twelve year old in the theater in 1987. It was fun to revisit in anticipation of the upcoming Blade figure in the Masterverse line.
 
DROP was a fun Sat night at the movie theatre. So glad I watched as little of the trailer for this one as possible.
 
I saw the Minecraft movie in Belfast. The movie itself was completely dumb and goofy while the people in it actually give it sincere performances. Jack Black looked like he rolled out of bed every day yet put more energy than he appears capable of into the character.

The theater... I don't know how indicative this is of a Belfast experience, or if it was just Minecraft, but it was like a prepubescent Rocky Horror showing. Certain lines triggered outbursts or even refreshment tossing.

I didn't come to Belfast to watch a movie I could see anywhere, but once I opened myself to the experience, I enjoyed myself. Especially since my kids wanted to see it so badly and their enjoyment took me over. And they really deserved it after traipsing around the Giant's Causeway and venturing into Newgrange for their parents. (Both of which they ended up enjoying once they got there... Like me with Minecraft.)

Oof, agreed. When Tom whipped off his shirt to go play on the beach with all the young actors, I was absolutely SO embarrassed for him.
Yikes Tom, yikes.

My wife and I went and grabbed a showing of Death of a Unicorn last night. We loved it. Very weird, laser-focused anti-oligarch satire, with fun monster stuff.

We’ve also been catching up on old Val Lewton movies on TCM. Isle of the Dead and The Body Snatcher are moody Karloff vehicles with great atmosphere (and Karloff gets to play wonderfully outside of his usual wheelhouse as the sardonic Gray in The Body Snatcher, extra hilarious because his nemesis is named, wait for it: Todd McFarlane. He calls him “Toddy” in the creepiest way possible), and then I finally, FINALLY got to see I Walked with a Zombie. Fantastic.

Abigail is SO GOOD! I would also recommend The Last Voyage of the Demeter, one of the few movies to ever get the “tone” of the novel Dracula correct. It truly feels like missing pages from the ship’s log from the book, sometimes even quoted directly! Basically if David Dastmalchian is in a film, you know it’s gonna be good.
We are in a low-key vampire movie Golden Age right now, actually. I’ve had Nosferatu on repeat since December: that movie was made literally just for me. Transcendent.
And we’ve got tickets for Friday night for Sinners!! Cannot wait. More elevated vampire films please!!
