Hulk Deluxe/Retro Wave

I think I lost my 85th Hulkbuster armor figure. I got rid of the desk it was on and I know where everything loose is from that area, but I can't remember where I stashed him...

Huh.

What was the Hulkbuster armor we got from TB ML11 (Riders wave)?

That was the version that was introduced in the mid 2000’s during the Execute Progran storyline in the Iron Man comics at the time when Tony was wearing the Extremis Armor. It’s the same design as the deluxe release that came out 2 years ago and the Marvel Select a few years before that.

This is the original version

I agree with Norm that the Toy Biz series 11 / Legendary Riders Hulkbuster was based on the original 90s design (we can argue over how successfully they captured the actual look). The dates don't work out for it to be based on the more modern version - the Legendary Riders wave was released in 2005, while the first issue of the "Execute Program" storyline came out in April 2006.

Fair enough but I’d like to remind you that Adi Granov was the designer of the Hulkbuster Mk . 2 armor and his work was notoriously late when he first got his start considering how polished his work tends to be.

So it’s possible that the design was ready first and both Jesse Falcon and Avi Arad decided to introduce the armor into the Legends line in time for Execute Program’s release, unfortunately both Granov and Warren Ellis were only getting started on the Extremis run by the time the figure was ready

I suppose it's possible. The series 11 figure also came with a copy of Iron Man vol 1 #305 where the Hulkbuster first appeared, and the guy who drew the trading card that came with the figure said he drew the card based on a proto of the figure itself. There's even a theory floating around out there that Adi Granov based his design on the Toy Biz figure.

ML was known for being very experimental with their designs in those Toy Biz days (see: Ultron from the same wave), so I think the balance of evidence is against the figure being based on a design that would have had to be completed and circulated for product development 2-3 years before it ever saw print and more likely to be an interpretation of the OG Hulkbuster.

You can also just compare the TB ML11 figure with the 5” figure, they have a lot more in common than the Granov design.
