G.I. Joe Classified Series

One thing that always bugged me about the Vipers: Why have goggles on top of your head when you have a full face covering battle helmet? Rule of cool in effect.

I read something recently about men trimming their eyelashes to appear more masculine. Smh, not going to offer any political or social commentary.

The Joe team never really cleared up what was behind the huge difference between the two Outbacks, right? I'm sure we'll never know what the deal is with R&R, but I'd love to find out if it was a factory situation or an intended design choice. I don't hate the change, but prefer the first version. A pair of shades from the accessory box might be kind of cool, whether to hide the eyes or not.

...I don't have a problem with eyeliner or mascara. JD can do whatever he wants with his eyes and I'd be much more comfortable hanging out with the goth kids at Walmart over the Connecticut rednecks that seem to appear after 6pm. Just sayin'.
I saw that trend with eyelashes too and while I generally don't care what people do with themselves looks-wise, I just kept thinking - my entire life, the women in my life have LOVED that I have really prominent eyelashes. Far more than once I've heard some version of the phrase "why do you have beautiful f***king eyelashes and have to PAINT MINE ON?"

I kinda want to be like hey, boys, boyos, old sons, the ladies, they love nice eyelashes, don't hamstring your face.

What was the question about the two Outbacks? I missed that there was any confusion about that and am honestly curious - I love both versions of him and he's always been one of my favorite characters, to the point I usually have both versions on display (I've never fully decided if the gray beard is Outback the Elder and red beard Outback the Younger or if Red Beard is using Just For Men to look younger.)

I'm going the other direction in my age -- my nostalgia blinders are getting way worse and I'm very likely to replace a figure with one that's even just slightly more like what I had as a kid. At this point, as cool as the updates and new designs are, it's nostalgia that's driving my collecting. That's the reason I still haven't broken down and gotten Raptor yet. Looks like a great figure, but it's too far removed from MY Raptor.
My thinking is, I have MY Raptor already. It's the 1987 version and he (along with most of my other vintage Joes) are already displayed. I don't necessarily need a 6" copy, might as well switch up things a bit, get imaginative with some of these looks and yet keep some of the unique themes. But I know a lot of people don't have or don't display the vintage stuff anymore.

I can't buy them all, but man, ALL of these Classified figures are hard to pass on. I don't know if there's been a release that I've passed because of a low effort. It's always been because it doesn't quite fit with what I'm going for, but the figure itself looks great. This line continues to be one of the best out there.

I never thought about it until I tried putting the goggles around where I guessed their eyes would be and it didn't look cool that way at all. Vipers know how to accessorize though.

I have had this exact same experience my whole life as well.

Aside from never wanting to kneecap myself in such a way, I can't IMAGINE bringing even the smallest scissors anywhere near my eyes, especially, I assume, frequently for routine maintenance. What is this, Dumb Final Destination?

I just assume they are there for if they decide to remove their helmets for any reason but still need just eye protection? Honestly with this toy line back in the day there was probably no thought put into it other than "I like helmets and goggles".

@Justice Right. It's like the little rectangle that hangs off a Stormtrooper's belt on their hip. The person designing it probably thought that spot looked too bare and came up with an idea to problem that solution.

My headcanon for the goggles is that they're some kind of infrared or nightvision thing, and that the silver mask they wear is purely there for vibes. They pull the goggles down when they need to see in the dark and because Cobra is all about the aesthetics, they just keep the mask on. CC gets mad if his boys don't wear their homage to him in combat, because it's all marketing.

Exactly! As long as they maintain their brand, Cobra can never truly be defeated.

"Hey Lt? Can I ask a question?"
"You can, but please consider the consequences of knowledge."
"Why didn't they build infrared into our masks? It feels... extra needing to pull goggles OVER an HUD."
"Wait, yours has an HUD? Mine is just a mask--"
"Mine is too, but I mean, why didn't they build it into the..."
"Destro said the same thing, but I heard him mutter something about 'give the client what they want and cash the check' or something."
"Alley Vipers have HUDs."
"Alley Vipers are special. You're not."
"Crap."
"What."
"I just sneezed in my mask. Can I take it off?"
"Absolutely not."

What's great about how Classified and even the modern 4" line handled those Vipers is they made the goggles removable. They barely ever stayed on the 4" figures, so I just left them off. There really is no justification for having goggles and that mirror mask. Unless in canon, they take the mask off to wear the goggles.

I’ve glued down the goggles on all my Vipers so far, and I probably will do the same with the retros.
