G.I. Joe Classified Series

lmao I was just about to make the joke that knowing these release dates, we'll actually get them in late November, when my phone dinged telling me Sci-Fi was coming Nov28

Just got like 12 messages about various Hasbro stuff arriving early. Guess I should cancel Wet Suit, Sci-Fi, and Mainframe from Pulse tonight.

Techno Viper's gun fits the tube for Ghost Viper and looks really cool!

Here's my DIRE Squad:

...and solo Crystal Ball. My headcanon is that this "Tacti-cool Indiana Jones" Crystal Ball visits exotic locales and ancient tombs looking for concentrations of DIRE elements in the wild. Techno Vipers then mine/farm the DIRE minerals (I'm customizing my Buzz Lightyear Plasma Drill for this) and all this work adds up to the DIRE squad being one of the most powerful groups in all of Cobra.

As much as I love how the DIRE group looks, it's hard to top a cool military fantasy adventure getup! Budo neckerchief, Outback harness and backpack (glue the backpack to the harness and it looks heavy and never falls off), 2-pack Falcon belt, Grunt thigh pouch, 2-pack Red Diver gun. Love seeing first release Duke's gun reused like this, it still rocks! I'm gonna paint that little blue bit at the end DIRE green.

That reminds me of Marvel’s XSE suits.

They really did. I'm completely on board for whatever D.I.R.E. stuff they cook up, plenty of troopers and Vipers they can give this color treatment, animals to reissue in ghosty green, whatever. Just shovel it my way.

Woooo! New wave is in my hands!!

Mainframe is, indeed, a short king. His gear is cool and complex. His new “tech guy” cap head is superior to his old helmet, though the head itself is totally fine. Very nice all around.
Wet Suit FINALLY gives us this character with the bells and whistles he needs! Just having the removable helmet with his classic tight-curls mop underneath is fantastic, and his facial expression is appropriately irascible. Only drawback is that he has a hard time gripping his motorized swimming wing thing: it’s way too wide for his hands, but fortunately his hands are soft enough to pull around the handles, more or less.
Sci-Fi is going to be on a lot of folks’ yearly Top 10 lists. He’s absolutely fantastic, as good as the very best Classifieds ever and maybe even the best one yet. Sculpt, gear, headsculpt, modular helmet . . . all are top tier. Definitely glad I got two in my case.
Grim Viper is how you do a “budget-saver” figure!! He’s MASSIVE. He mostly shares parts with the recent Sarge, but for the torso, and he is just as beefy and intimidating as the very largest figures in the line. He has excellent paint apps, especially on his “way way WAY scarier than a standard Range-Viper” helmet. With his woodland colors and giant frame with that terrifying mask, he comes off like a Classified version of a slasher-movie villain. He looks . . . brutal. And with eighteen confirmed kills notched on his minigun, he eclipses Major Bludd (and his dog tag collection) as the Cobra agent with the highest recorded body count. Grim Viper indeed.

Sci-Fi is definitely the best of the bunch, but Grim Viper just hits me in all the squishy places and I know he’ll be the one who gets the most play and winds up in my pocket or my work bag.

All in all: Classified remains on fire and the gold standard for domestic figure lines. It’s tough to get a Masterverse wave AND a Classified wave in the same week because I love both lines so much, but not even the absolute banger that is New Etheria Mantenna can put the fantastic Masterversers above the Classified boys.
