I completely get it, but I also think it's funny how much I think those are both bad and terrible stories in retrospect.

Why is the joker the Iranian ambassador?! Silly starlin, you crazy cat and your robin hating ways

And killing joke...well, oracle was kinda neat but gosh what a gross comic in retrospect

Totally understood.
That said, as a Joker superfan, those are major benchmarks for me. They also came out when I was 9/10, so that was pretty formative. Ultimately it was more about those events being fixed continuity points than the stories themselves. Stakes were upped significantly for villains when Jason’s death “stuck” and Barbara had to grapple with the trauma of what was done to her. Although I’d maintain now that the Joker’s most horrifying moment was head-shotting Sarah Essen-Gordon in front of babies, and letting said babies play in the blood from the wound while he just walked away and turned himself in. Y-I-K-E-S.

But yes: Iranian ambassador Joker is ridiculous and also, frankly, pretty damn islamophobic.
 
I actually agree about Killing Joke. There are elements of it I thought were great, mostly the moments between Batman and Joker, but yeah... The Barbara stuff makes me ill.
 
Heh. I never make friends with my love for The Killing Joke. It’s still my favorite single issue of a comic ever. There’s a reason why my handle is Ace of Knaves. Although my *favorite* sicko 80s Joker story (by a wide margin) is Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth.

One of the most amusing and frustrating things about killing joke was how it was never supposed to be in continuity, but other writers couldn't help themselves
 
The worst thi g about the killing joke outside of content is how bolland supports that ugly ass recolor that takes away so much of what makes the original worth a dang
