My wife thinks she looks cool, and even likes the mask better than unmasked.
I definitely dig her, lame storyline notwithstanding.
I love Larry Hama, but I'm going here:
The set up was good, but Dawn's storyline is the definition of wasted potential.
Original Snake Eyes dies.
His memories get transferred into Dawn via Dr. Venom's brainwave scanner. OK, cool. You are set up for some potentially very interesting stories. Now you have a new Snake Eyes who has old Snake Eyes' memories in the body of a young heroin and she has to reconcile this. Roll with it.
But wait, at the same time this is all going down, another guy on the Joe team (Sean Collins) gets his face horribly scared, his vocal cords get damaged so now he can't speak........AND he wears the original Snake Eyes' v1 costume!
So now you have dead original Snake Eyes, Dawn with original Snake Eyes' memories, and Sean Collins scarred, mute, wearing Snake Eyes' costume.
The Sean Collins twist was a terrible move. You kill Snake Eyes, but essentially Snake Eyes is still around. This undermines the whole plot for Dawn, but MAYBE you can still do something cool with her...
But wait, then the ORIGINAL Snake Eyes up and does a super-hero-style return from the dead! So you have original Snake Eyes (who talks now), poser Snake Eyes, and Dawn. So what is the point of Dawn anymore?
Sigh. It's too bad.
I repeat, I love Larry Hama and I'll aways be grateful for one of may favorite comic runs of all time. I'm grateful that no matter what banner he writes GI Joe under, that his editors, for better or worse, basically give him free rein. I'm grateful for only having to buy ONE GI Joe comic to get the full story. Some stories work, some don't. I'll take that over stifling editorial control overseen by a multi-million dollar movie studio that wants endless crossovers and annual alignment with whatever movie is coming this summer. I'll stick with Hama until the end, but the Dawn storyline was a let down.
So why do I want a Dawn figure? Because like I said, the premise behind Dawn is pretty cool. I'm letting my head canon take over from there.
