Diamond Select Lord of the Rings

I’m sorry Zach. Praying for you and your family during this time. You input on here and over the Minimates forums has been great and very appreciated. Any company would be lucky to have you on their team especially any toy company.

I really hate to hear that and hope you land on your feet in an even better gig soon. I also hope you will continue to pop in here as a "civilian".

I sent bbts customer service an email to see if they have any updates on the status of DST pre-orders. This was part of their reply, "we are hoping that it is likely that most Pre-orders are still going to be fulfilled but we can't say for certain at this point."

I know that isn't really new or definitive information, but it is making me more optimistic we'll at least get Witch King and Eowyn. I still can't believe DST is no more. Crazy.

I really hope they're something LotR related at Toyfair. Who could get the license now? The Notta figures are gonna be high end expensive, but who could grab the master license, especially with the upcoming movie?

My hopes would be Hasbro, Neca, Mafex... maybe Spin Master? Mattel?

I doubt there would even be a master toy license at this point. WB would probably just piece it out to various companies. I also don't see companies like Hasbro and Mattel going after a toy license for a movie series which is 20 years old at this point. Hasbro got the Voltron license...for the upcoming movie, and they got the Harry Potter license...for the upcoming show. I don't see them pushing a retail line for a movie series which is two decades past.

The Harry Potter license from hasbro also includes the films. And like I said, there's the upcoming Hunt for Gollum movie. There's also the fact that the movies are still relevant today, just like the HP movies.

There might not be a master license, but I'm pretty sure the want for a good toyline is there. And let's be honest, MOTU is like 40 years old and yet Mattel keeps pumping out product, so I don't see why companies wouldn't want to release LotR figures.

I think it really just depends on the product. Apparently the DST figures were selling pretty well, if they're to be believed. At least well enough to give us around 20 releases or so. Fair share of QC issues, sure, but people seemed to be buying them. If a new company could release some quality products at decent prices, I could see them lasting a while. We'll never get anything as expansive as the old ToyBiz line, but I don't necessarily think that a well made, well priced LOTR line is impossible in this day and age. But it would be a risk.

Hasbro.
Lord of the Rings.
Nostalgia homage line just like all the retro cards.

Whether in jest or not, that idea would frickin' rock.

For what it's worth- obviously Pops are their own things, but the LOTR Pops have always sold pretty well in my area. If people would pay 15-30 for those, it makes me hopeful that they'd pay around 25 or so for an articulated line. They're the closest gauge we really have to a mass market modern LOTR line. DST, Loyal Subjects, McFarlane- the latter two may have had a little bleed over into mass market stores, but for the most part, they were all comic and specialty stores.

With Rings of Power still going on, and a bunch of people seemingly having seen LOTR on the big screen for the first time during this recent re-release, I'd say there'd still be plenty of interest in a line

Do you think Hasbro has Disney level of lawyer wizardry? By that I mean, imagine if they had the rights for the film adaptation, the Amazon adaptation, the Rankin-Bass adaptation and the BOOK adaptation? That's a probably impossible deal, but a hobbit can wish. The films are in my top ten of all time, but I do appreciate other interpretations of it.

I would hate for it to end up like OZ, in that the 1930s movie has become so many peoples idea of what OZ is, that any version that tries to do something different (or more book accurate like Return to OZ), people say "Well thats not the OZ i know" and it gets dismissed. So the studios try to mimic the musical and it comes out like a bad parody in my opinion (Oz great and Powerful, Wicked).

I just want Bombadil, the Swan Knights and the blue wizards to hang out in Dol Amroth.

No jest, I think it's the best way to do it. That Two Towers Blue...
