Gong Studios Hush Batman

I wish I loved this figure more than I do, as I love their Kingdom Come Supes and Shazam, but man...it just doesn't do anything for me. And a lot of these pics aren't doing anything to change that.

And man oh man, am I becoming disenchanted with Mafex anymore. Especially with their rising prices. They were for the longest time the best option. When it was announced that they were doing DCEU figures, and I didn't have to rely on Mattel's abysmal efforts, I was over the moon.

But like TSI said, I look at many of their figures now and think "How did I ever enjoy this?". Especially now that LPZZ and InArts are entering the arena. That InArt Bale Bats is better than anything Mafex has ever put out and it's not even close.

When Mafex did the second release of blue grey Batman, I also bought that one to have an extra because it was the best Batman evar and would not be topped for a long time. I should've known better, but that doesn't mean I'm completely down on Mafex.

I'm not a huge fan of InArt Bale to the point where I never bothered to put the cape on him.

Yeah I don’t care how well InArt is doing with their figures, they’re choosing costume designs and versions of Batman I don’t even like. So I don’t care how well received they are or how well designed they are, I’m never going to look at those and think “Oh yeah, absolutely….that Christian Batle Batman, Absolute Batman and the Arkham Knight Batman are for sure 10/10 releases. For sure.

Okay...

But you can still acknowledge that they are exceptionally well done. Objectively. The sculpts are quite literally 1/12 Hot Toys. They are what Mez wishes he were doing. So, favorites or not, you can still say "Those are excellent, enjoy 'em if you buy 'em".

I always thought the Knightfall figure was worse. Both figures cut the best silhouette on the shelf when they are ensconced in cape.

I also thought the Hush line was a little overrated. I think I rate it correctly for what I want out of it, but it gets put on a pedestal elsewhere. In that photo I think Catwoman is the worst example and offender

But I also can't put Gong up there. The articulation breaks are too obvious under the costume, which defeats the soft goods to me. And I also would never mix a full cloth costume with plastic figures because that just doesn't compute for whatever I've got going on in my head.

I actually posted it last night just to fish. If I keep it I keep it. If someone wants to reimburse me for it, there's other stuff that I think is cooler.

Because there was a time it was top. That's how dire it was post Mattel and then McFarlane coming in. I look back at every toy biz Legend and I think they look like shit. But once it was cutting edge to what we had.

And for a while Mafex was doing things that were new to a lot of collectors that were onboarding into the import/ expensive scene.

You pick up any review on YouTube and everyone flips out about the wired cape, which was a custom arcane trick even 5 years ago to the mainstream instabros. Even Mezco had to catch up on the wire. Todd made it doable. Hasbro still doesn't. The articulation is still good. Accessories. At the time it was redefining a standard. People used to think Pizza Spidey was awesome and now look at him. Bucky Cap.

The industry tech is accelerating. Even some of the earlier face print figures don't hold up to current face print over at Hasbro. It's awesome for now. But we didn't know and it was still awesome then.

I think the community should take a step back and realize how far we've come since covid with all these third party offerings licensed or not. Then consider how big a chunk of your life 5 years is. Some of us weren't even into GI Joe for 5 years because we discovered sexuality or preteen autonomy. We are really spoiled for choice and quality the past 5 years of toy collecting, and it's also all about to come crashing down with economy and international relations. Enjoy it.

I think Four Horsemen Studios were the first company to introduce wired soft goods in their Mythic Legions line. And a lot of third party makers were doing these well before companies because I purchased several wired spawn capes before the Mafex figure was even introduced as a prototype

As someone who lived in a bunch of custom communities for Mezco and Horsemen, while wired stuff existed, a lot of people act like it's sorcery to make it home, or lack the basic internet research skills to find places that deal in them.

We are not the average collector. We are the front of the class apple polishing homework reminding before break nerds.

Mafex and toy collecting broke wide open during covid when everyone had their covid money, which introduced a lot of casuals into the scene.

You're talking third party makers. I'm talking making everybody pack it in as a feature.

This just dawned on me but why didn’t Gong Studios provide Batman with an extra hand with a Kryptonite ring adorned on it? We know that they teased a Hush Superman at WonFest earlier this year. Shouldn’t that have been a no brainer of an accessory?

I have to look into this, but I swear I have Hasbro wired bottom jedi robes from 3.75 accessory packs circa Phantom Menace. Then it became lost technology. I don't know if anybody remembers, maybe I'm imagining this.

I don't recall them being wired, but that would be cool if they are. I'll have to scrub YouTube.

That's fair, though I still regard many of them as excellent. I'd tier the ones I own/have owned like this:

Excellent
  • Nightwing
  • DKR Superman
  • Bane
  • Gambit
  • Wolverine (brown)
  • Captain America
  • Daredevil
  • Magneto
  • Spider-Man (symbiote)
  • T-800
  • Deadpool (red)
Adequate
  • Catwoman
  • Joker
  • Poison Ivy
  • Riddler
  • John Wick (Chapter 2)
  • Deadpool (UXF)
  • Batman (Hush/Knight Crusader)
  • Harley Quinn (Hush)
  • Spider-Man (classic)
  • Storm
  • Phoenix
  • Wolverine (UXF)
Poor
  • Wolverine (tiger stripe)
  • Psylocke
  • Jean Grey
I was blown away by Catwoman's articulation when I first got her. She has the Toy Biz proportions issue, though. I rank her much lower now.

Unfortunately, I don't own any of their Star Wars figures anymore and couldn't begin to guess which ones I owned in the past. That'd make for a much more interesting list.

I will say, I do love their Return of Superman line. They are pretty rad. But on their own, not paired with anything else. If that makes sense.

Jim Lee Cyclops also belongs on the poor list. I still get ptsd from that release every now and again. Stupid head would never stay on and the metallic paint chipped if I so much as bent his elbow. Ugh what a sorry ass figure that release turned out to be. Thank goodness for the ML VHS Cyclops and the Astonishing release. Those two are absolute gems. The VHS cyclops was actually my number one figure of the year in 2022.
