Last Movie Watched

Poltergeist is one I need to rewatch; been ages. I remember being terrified as a kid of the scene where he rips his face off. Thinking of it still jeebies my heebies. But I remember really liking the rest of it- Zelda Rubinstein was a legend. Hearing her narrate The Scariest Places On Earth made it all the more spooky to me. NECA, where's my ultimate Tangina Barrons?!

Poltergeist 2 isn't bad really. It has some really great sequences, but I just haven't seen it as much as the original. The family dynamic is what makes the movie for me. But Poltergeist 2 has Taylor and he is one of the best characters in any of the Poltergeists.

Also, Sonny Landham plays a scumbag in the original!

I've been tearing through Halloween movies over the last six weeks. I'll post the list once I finish next week.
Last movie I watched, though, was Trick R Treat. Husband, daughter and I got to watch it on the big screen locally last week as a family outing. One of my favorite movies of all time, so it was really cool getting to experience it with the family like that.
I almost don't want to know, but how old is your daughter now?

She's 9, now! 4th freaking grade!

It goes by so, so freaking fast. We fly out for Disney in the morning, our second Halloween there, and the difference between going at 3 and going at 9 is wild.

Great age for Disney. Have fun!

Tonight's horror movie, Bring Her Back. This one was a RIDE. Wild from front to back. Not for the gore squeamish or those with kids who are sensitive to kids getting badly messed up. The kids do not fair well in this one (or Talk to Me for that matter, but this one felt more intense). Sally Hawkins, though. Brilliantly weird and awful and terrifying. She's just chewing on all the scenery in this one. It's one of those roles that's so extreme that I really hope it was a blast for her to play.

I don't know that I'd go back to this one later, but like Talk to Me, glad I gave it a whirl. It's memorable.

Yeah, Bring Her Back is one of the more disturbing things I've seen. It and Talk to Me are solid 3.5/5s for me.
Somehow I didn't realize until after watching Bring Her Back that both are done by the same director duo. But of course that totally tracks.

Talk to Me and Bring Her Back rocked my world in the best ways. Those filmmakers are going places. Sooo bleak, soooo nihilistic, sooooo incredible.

And yes: Sally Hawkins is a damn treasure. As an actor myself, she’s aspirational goals for sure in terms of hardcore commitment to a crazy role.

She made me realize I don't put enough weird sickos in my ttrpg campaigns. Meticulous masterminds and thuggish brutes, sure. Stoic, weirdly honorable antagonists, a plenty. I even have a few miserable bastards. But I need to start working in some real wack-a-loons. I'm not having enough fun with my villains.

My best friend @Dark_Spectre_Threeps and I do movie nights every Tuesday, because tickets are cheaper, and we skipped last week because I had a cold & needed to recover before TFCon last weekend because I had to help another friend with his table (who paid me in cash & Transformers lol), so last night we did a double feature of Shelby Oaks & Black Phone 2. Loved both!

I also thought it was funny that I appreciated Smile & The Black Phone for what they were, but ultimately wasn't blown away by them, but ADORE their sequels, lol.

Ok, quick update on my spooky season viewing:

The Substance: Very French throughout, and goes from standard French gross to Cronenberg gross to Troma gross at the end. Very memorable, and goofy, and fun, though I probably won't necessarily go back to it.

Drag Me To Hell: An oldie, but I hadn't seen it and after years of hearing about it I was honestly really underwhelmed. Nothing about it was unusually bad for a Raimi film or anything, but I just didn't vibe with it. This is the first one of the season that was just a total miss for me.

Weapons: Tonally it's a bit unfocused, and I will admit I really hoped the reveal of what was going on was weirder. That said, decent enough horror flick, and the ending with all the kids was a lot of fun. Some real good eerie camera work in it. The camera "leans" were excellent.

Yeah...I haven't seen it since it came out but that's about how I felt at the time. It was marketed as his first real straight horror movie, but he couldn't help slip Three Stooges stuff in there. Which is fine, but I've seen him do a lot of that stuff way better with smaller budgets, heh.

Like, i know Raimi stuff, I was totally prepped for that. i think what didn't work for me was the main character and her whole ambiance. Like she works in a bank and kind of has this vibe that would fit better in a romantic comedy. If the whole movie had been the seance scene and similar weird goofy stuff, I'd have probably liked it more. The curse never seemed to be all that bad other than being gross and occasionally tossing her around, so that wasn't terribly threatening, and the b plot of the rival dude felt like it could have been pumped up and made the whole movie more interesting/nastier. Like, she's told she needs to make a sacrifice to appease the spirit, but she kills a kitten instead of this brown-nosing dickhead who is actively sabotaging her.

Instead of choosing the option that would raise the stakes and put her in more trouble either way, they go for the option that makes her less likeable as a character but is more or less completely swept under the rug except for a gross out gag later. Meh.

I feel like this should be on Raimi’s tombstone.
Literally the ONLY one of his films in which I find the nyuck-nyuck-nyuck humor remotely palatable is Army of Darkness. Everywhere else it just sucks the life out of his films. I actually like Drag Me To Hell for the most part, but oof that “wacky” comedy really pulls me out.
