Two modern masterpieces. From September 2019 Something is Killing the Children and from October 2014 Wytches.

I'm not really that big on modern comics but I loved these two. Wytches received a 2016 Bram Stoker Award nomination for Superior Achievement in a Graphic Novel. Something is Killing the Children has won four Eisner Awards and four Ringo Awards. It was also nominated for a Bram Stoker award.

Something is Killing the Children is also being developed as a live action movie and adult animated series with Blumhouse productions

Both of these books are still in print if you want something scary to read on Halloween.
 
We're going to go back to Rutland Vermont and the Halloween Parade one last time.

From October 1970 Avengers #83 and from October 1973 Avengers #119.

Avengers 83 was the first time the Halloween Parade was used as a location in a comic. My 12 year old self could not believe such an event could be real but it sounded like so much fun. Of course Tom Fagan had a quick cameo, as did the writer of the story, Roy Thomas and his then wife Jean. The Masters of Evil were the bad guys trying to spoil all the fun. And the Lady Liberators made their one and only appearance under the spell of a disguised Enchantress masquerading as the Valkyrie. I often wondered where Sue Richards was during all this but maybe she was in the Negative Zone or on the Blue Area of the Moon or something.

The Avengers returned to Rutland again a few years later to find the Collector up to his old tricks. The Collector figured "Hey, it's Rutland, it's Halloween, maybe some superheroes will show up that I can collect." Well, he was right. Tom Fagan was the only real life cameo in the story. No one from the Marvel Bullpen was there.

You know, now that Marvel and DC are playing nice with each other again, I keep hoping one of the two companies will collect all the Rutland stories in a hardcover or trade paperback. It's a part of their shared heritage.

The cover to Avengers 83 was penciled by John Buscema and inked by Tom Palmer. The cover to 119 was penciled and inked by John Romita Sr.

That would be cool. I was pretty much unaware of this whole thing with Rutland, now I hope they end up in the MCU as well.
 
As for all the horse hub-bub, I would think Valkyrie would be a prime candidate. That's probably the most notable "horse character" I can think of for Marvel, at least for me. I know there's some Ghost/Phantom riders and whatever the new non-mutant mutant in the X-Men that has a horse. I'm with Jerry on this one.

Today is Bernie Wrightson's birthday. He was born on October 27th, 1948. He would be 77 years old. How amazing is it that one of the greatest supernatural horror artists who ever lived was born so close to Halloween.

I did love those Dollar Comics. They reminded me of the old 80 pg Giants of the Silver Age. 80 pages of comics could keep a boy out of trouble for a few hours.

Oh man, you aren't kidding! Any 80 pager was a gem when I was younger! I'd read it cover-to-cover, then go back and study the artwork, then read it AGAIN after that! Hell, I could stare at a cover like this for hours!
 
Back in the mid 90's, a fantastic writer and painter named Dan Brereton created a fun comic book called The Nocturnals.

I loved this book. It really doesn't get much more Halloween than this.
 
I LOVE the Nocturnals! I'm still upset we never got the action figure line that was planned!

Cool story about Brereton: I bought the two hardback collections he did of the series several years ago. I'd break them out periodically to read the whole thing again, especially around October. In 2017 the house I was living in was flooded during Hurricane Harvey, and almost all of my hardcover books were destroyed. In most cases, I just resigned myself that they were gone for good, as I didn't have the money to replace most of them, and in some cases they were long out of print. Since these particular Nocturnals hardbacks weren't THAT old at the time, I figured I could track them down and replace them fairly easily...but I was wrong. In most cases, if I found them on eBay or what-not, they were ridiculously overpriced (and, in those cases, Dan wouldn't get any revenue from that). Even on Dan's webstore, they weren't available and he only had a few of the trades for sale. Since I am Facebook friends with him, I figured I'd reach out to him and see if he planned to put those back up in his store, or if there was an authorized dealer who I could buy them from to assure he got paid. Dan responded back with a heartfelt message of understanding, as he said he had lost his comic collection in a house fire a few years back. He told me the books were out of print at that point, but he asked for the address where I was staying. I didn't think much of that, figuring he was probably going to find out if any retailers in my area had the books, but no...a few days later I get this massive package from him with BOTH volumes personally signed by him! Such an incredibly cool thing of him to do, and I cannot express how much that made my day during a really shitty time in my life.
