I think it's important to contextualize with other sports. Whenever the Kraken are eliminated (usually by March), I root for the Maple Leafs the rest of the way. I may as well have picked the Buffalo Bills (wait, I do that when my NFL team is eliminated, too). When you see that heartbreak elsewhere, you realize how hard it is to win. You wonder, "Will I even see one during my lifetime?"
If things were totally equitable, a fan would see two or three championships in their lifetime. Things aren't equitable. The Pirates aren't winning in my lifetime. Same for the Reds, Athletics, and a whole host of others. Historically good teams come along and hoover up all the titles. The Patriots, Chiefs, Red Sox, Yankees, etc. The fucking Marlins have two.
To me, you have to take your chances when you get them. I grew up a big Carolina Panthers fan. They've made two Super Bowls in my lifetime. The first, against the Patriots, they had no business in. They kept it close. The second, against the Broncos, they should've won. They lost by two scores. Both times, you could've reasonably thought they'd be back. The core of the 2003 team only made the playoffs two more times, and the 2015 team only made the playoffs one more time. Neither came close to the Super Bowl again.
I'm new to Mariners fandom, so I don't have the right to be all that upset. Still, I think yesterday will haunt me (and the team) for a long time to come. You never know when you'll be back, and leading a game 7 in the seventh inning, they should've won.
The sad thing is, I only wanted to see them win the pennant. I'm not naive enough to think they could beat the Dodgers.
