Tracking toy tariffs

Got an email from FedEx for a tariff charge from a delivery back in November. $25 out of the blue I wasn't expecting.
I just got an invoice from FedEx for a package that was delivered last week. They are charging me for the tariffs and then a $15 disbursement charge on top of the tariffs. Apparently the disbursement charge is FedEx’s own fee for getting your package through customs.

Not fun.

Where are you guys ordering from that these charges aren't being covered? I've had multiple packages from China since all this started and never had an extra charge. Cool Toys Club, LT Cave, various Ali shops... None of them have come FedEx, however. Couple UPS, but mostly USPS.

Mine was for a preorder directly from the manufacturer. The order was probably placed before all the crazy tariffs wreaked havoc so there never was a tariff fee added. This is just the first time I have ever had to pay a shipping company for it and the extra $15 FedEx charged for themselves was a complete surprise.

This is what I am finding out about the fee when I search online:

“A FedEx disbursement fee (or advancement fee) is an administrative charge for paying duties and taxes on behalf of the importer to expedite customs clearance. It is typically applied when importing goods and usually costs the greater of $15 or 2% of the total duties/taxes, often with higher rates depending on the country or currency.”

It's a fee because they did it for you. The paperwork. The supposed payment. You do have the option to do it yourself but nobody does that because they don't know how and it holds it up.

For what it's worth, I have contested FedEx in Canada and had those little fees waived. I don't know what the email address for the American side would be, but they should provide it if you inquire.

Makes sense and thanks for the tip about contesting. Hopefully it doesn’t happen again but if it does I may start contesting and figure out how to do the forms myself.

For me in Toronto, the form is pretty easy, but they want you to turn it in and pay in person down at the airport which negates all of the cost and time benefit.

But I do know a guy in an old toy group who does it out of principle. It's 2026, this could be easily be a web form and debit, right?

FedEx? contest that fee
no way should they be charging for something already months old & delivered!
I've had it with FedEx myself. They added charges to one of my eBay packages a while back. I was told it wasn't based on weight but on the size. The size was a normal size but it was my own box so. Apparently they love charging extra fees after the fact the package was delivered!

They acquiesced so fast when I contested, I have to imagine they just don't count on anyone doing it.

I think it's really fun how the courts told him he can't just do tariffs whenever and however he wants and he just... kept doing it. And nothing happened. Because Trump is King of America.

Don't be silly. Don't you remember how Trump said he would bring down drug prices by 500%-600% at least? 100% tariff on drugs that pay you to take them just means more money in your pocket!!!!

It looks like, from the reporting, that this is just another nothing burger executive order from Trump. The stipulations around the tariffs are pretty specific and exclude most of the existing makers/drugs because they already mostly come from favoured nations. Much like how the tariffs on Canada exclude anything covered under CUSMA (which is something like 85% of trade).

I guess he is trying to distract from the shit show he is currently in with Iran, but as someone pointed out on a podcast it seems like the Iran folly has finally dented his ability to control the media narrative. I mean the Iran war was done to distract from the Epstein files, and now he is firing Bondi to distract from the Iran war which won't work because it won't stay in the media's focus for long thanks to the war sucking up most of the oxygen.

Don't get me wrong, I think Trump and most of his administration belong in an oubliette, but Trump still has the ability to levy tariffs after the Supreme Court ruling because he always had two loopholes in reserve.

The Supreme Court said he couldn't impose tariffs under IEEPA and designate any old thing an "emergency", but his executive power to levy tariffs for unfair trade practices under Section 301 and his power to levy tariffs for national security reasons under Section 232 were never in question. After the court ruled against Trump's IEEPA tariffs, Lutnick basically went on a conservative press tour to gloat that they'd just shift their tariff reasoning until the courts get after them again.
