McFarlane Toys Elite Editions

Vonner's efforts have failed more than succeeded as of late.

Tried at Hasbro. Failed.
Tried at Mattel. Failed.
Tried to go back to Hasbro. Failed.
Tried to jumpstart a Valiant Comics line. Failed.
Jumped to Nacelle. Failed.
Street Humans. Failed.
Brutal Realm. Time will tell, but not looking promising.

He is riding off of the goodwill and successes of previous decades with Toy Biz and Marvel Legends, but genuinely hasn't brought anything new to the table in the same amount of time.

Across the board, or specific winners? I wasn't in tune with the talent, I just bought 'em.
I honestly don't remember which specific figures he worked on, beyond his likeness being used for the original TBML War Machine (ML8, I think?). He was there for a while, though. And he transitioned to doing the horribly-articulated various 1:18 products like the early MCU movie lines and Marvel Universe. He's really proud of that stuff despite that it's pretty universally reviled, so I have no idea why that's a feather in the cap.

Honestly, I think more than his time with ToyBiz, Vonner still has a lot of goodwill from fans because of the Batman sculpt he showed off. It was basically Marvel Legends Batman that he was trying to sell as a line for Mattel, and Mattel never bit on it, and we got DCUC instead. But the Batman he showed off is arguably still the best non-import Batman figure for people who like stuff like DCUC and Marvel Legends. I think most fans that still say 'Vonner is great' are thinking about that Batman figure they never got.

I need Mattel to reveal their upcoming collector figures already and have them be better than this so there's no reason for anybody to ever post this thing ever again. I'm tired of seeing it on Insta nonstop for years. The sculpt is great, but the only thing engineering-wise that I like more than most "current" acton figures is the ankles being a proper ball hinge. The torso feels so outdated at a glance.

I don't mind a diaper set-up if the material and engineering is right and it doesn't impede anything. I absolutely adore how Classified does it, but if it feels McFarlane in hand... ehhhh.

I think it's more about history in a bottle. If that figure had come out when it was designed, it would have been the best Batman figure for -years- to come on legitimate grounds. The only reason it's still probably the best non-import Batman is because domestic companies make shitty Batman figures.

Has anyone seen anyone do customs with Gamerverse Wolvie? He's so fun to pose; a Batman on that body would be perfect for a Kelley Jones vibe.

If that Batman HAD come out, I don't even think it would have been the absolute best for long. We probably would have had a decades worth of good DC toys to follow in any universe where the world's richest paperweights were smart enough to greenlight it.

I was frothing at the mouth when it was first shown off, but it's lost its luster for me at this point. I'd certainly take something with the engineering of a bog standard ML figure if I'm desperate for the character (like Malcolm), but it just doesn't impress me anymore with how most new domestic lines I see are usually a bit better than that.

Not that you're saying otherwise, but just to be clear: I'm not holding that Batman up as 'we must have this today.' I'm holding it up only as the reason so many people seem to still be in love with Vonner. It's all based on the -idea- of what he -might- have done more than 15 years ago.

Oh no I agree fully with that, just a vaguely related statement on my part. I see it quite frequently hyped up on Insta and otherwise, and I kinda get it given the desperation for good DC figures, but it's also just feels like old news of what never will happen.
