Marvel 1/6 Scale (Mondo, Hot Toys, etc.)

This is what I don't get about Mondo at all:

Why does she come with five nearly-identical heads when she could literally come with face plates? Why am I stuck paying extra for all that extra plastic? Why are we bringing all that extra plastic into the world?

That's an insane waste of plastic, paint and money!!! One ponytail head with four plates, one long hair head - DONE.

She looks great, but how this is economical I can't understand. The weight alone!

Did they ever fully reveal Storm's accessories and extra pieces?

I’m actually surprised she doesn’t come with any X-Men ‘97 heads.

They didn't have any more slots after these five.

I was too, but maybe it's because her 97 look is more different than the others? It's not a lot but it's maybe the most of the main eight.

Beast also looks all ‘92 given the body shape.

I saw him in person at NYCC. I have to wonder if the sculpts were mainly ‘92 but they just show-horned in some ‘97 head sculptor for synergy.

They’ve been pretty open about it on the livestreams they do that Marvel requested the change to 97, but their source is still firmly 92. Of note though, Beast’s card does designate him as being from X-Men: The Animated Series as opposed to X-Men 97. Not sure if that’s unique to him. He’s the one who probably changed the least going from one to the other. His jaw is maybe a little wider in 92, but that’s about it.

Storm's Timed Edition product page is up.

Aside from her blue eyes looking slightly crossed, she looks awesome. I want the Savage Land ponytail head look.

But - NO BASE!!! Not a Sentinel piece, not a puff of cloud - nothing. She'll never stand. I'm sure it's a cost-cutting issue, but that kinda kills my enthusiasm.

But then this photo:

Revives it. I have all of those figures on Ebay right now but now I want to cancel all the listings. UGH.

I’m guessing she’ll have their new flight stand. How well it works has yet to be tested (I think Nightcrawler is the first to come with it).

A base is not pictured in any of the images, like it is with Nightcrawler. I'm hopeful it will be because this flying character in heels with big hair absolutely needs it.

I'd think the "heeled" characters like Storm would be the most in need of a base, which is sorely lacking. She looks good but the eyes are a bit close together / inwardly turned. It looks like a good overall figure, but I think Jean's face is a little more captivating like Rogue's was. Not really even considering Beast as he stands too upright and it seems like his head should be slightly larger. Maybe he'll look better with his mouth closed and glasses?

I hadn't noticed they started making those, interesting. Hard to call it a flight stand since it's shorter than the figure but I get what you mean since it does supposedly hold him off the ground even if barely.

That clip shown below must have amazing force and tightness because it's BARELY around his chest in the pic. 🤔

I have concerns about the stand as well and would really like to see it in practice, though I suppose it’s not the sort of thing that would stop me from getting Storm one way or the other. I do wish she had a tornado effect to clip onto it for added weight and stability like Nightcrawler seems to have with his BAMF! smoke. As for the stand itself, Mondo lists a base and stand in the accessories as coming with her so she’ll have one, just with nothing extra for it.

Also of note, I watched last week’s Gotham City Tonight which is co-hosted by Mondo sculptor Alex Brewer and he claims Beast can crouch. He considered displaying him that way at NYCC but it’s just a resin model right now so he opted for a simple pose to show off the paint deco. I’m skeptical, but we’ll see. I suppose he really only needs to hunch forward for a neutral stance and what really needs yo happen there is for his head to have enough range to still look straight ahead with his upper body at an angle. The new Wolverine will be interesting to see if he can do those partial crouches as he so often does in all media.

One thing to note is that Storm is a timed and not limited edition. I’ve been noticing that since the tariffs, the limited edition figures haven’t been selling out for a while vs. before where some sold out in minutes. I wonder if the switch is to still retain some exclusivity. Also, probably a sign that their sales are actually down.

Anyway, great to get the core cast and core villains (almost). I would expect them to continue with characters like Cable, Bishop, and Morph for the heroes and Mystique and maybe Apocalypse for the villains, but would be surprised if they tried anyone else. I mean, yeah, they could do a deluxe $600 Professor X with the chair, but I actually don’t think that would sell well.

They’re crazy enough to do huge sets with MOTU so I think they’ll go there eventually with Xavier. The only difference is the chair isn’t optional for the character like Battle Cat is for He-Man or Swiftwind with She-Ra. I think they’ll definitely put him off as long as they can to see if the pricing can get better. They may even attempt Apocalypse first who they’ve been pretty open about wanting to do at some point.
