S.H.Figuarts General Anime (Dragon Ball, Naruto, MHA, etc.)

Alright, I got the Tonsen Bike Goku figure in from Hobby Model Shop. He does not disappoint, except for the price. $94.06 from China to my doorstep, very expensive, especially for a third party. But it does come with a really cool, metal, DBZ style bike that'd work with my MEZCO TMNT as well, and two full heads/swappable portraits.

But, what has me the most excited is that the heads look superb, and work extremely well on the 2.0 and Martialist Forever bodies. No contest, these are my favorite Son Goku headsculpts so far. Blows everything Bandai has done out of the water. I grew up with DBZ pre Cartoon Network, when they reran the Saiyan Saga over and over on generic local TV. So this is Goku to me, 100% Can't wait to try them out on the new SS body coming this summer.

I finally have a base form Goku on the shelf (two of them really) that looks, to me, like Goku.

I got the Dragon Ball Daima Vegeta in today and was able to put down the Storm Arena Ken long enough to open it and check it out. This is a wonderful figure! I think if the styling was Dragon Ball Z people would be gushing about it, but the articulation is a huge step up over their regular Vegeta body. He can actually do splits in both directions and kick as high as you want to go. The torso is a bit over-engineered with hinges and such, but it does work, it just gets gappy. The butterfly joint isn't extreme, but he has no trouble doing a Final Flash pose. That may be partially due to the slender build of Daima Vegeta, but since I don't have a base Vegeta in the Cell Saga armor this works for me. It's also a damn good deal. All new sculpt with four portraits, two sets of hair, 10 hands, and a crossed-arms piece all for $35.

A couple weeks ago in another thread, I mentioned I almost bought the Revoltech. Maybe I'll get this one if the US prices are reasonable.

The Naruto ramen set was marked down pretty cheap on Amazon this week, so I finally bit the bullet and grabbed it. I know nothing about Naruto, but who wouldn't want a little ramen stall for their figures to hang out in?

The little accessories are real charming and a test in hand stability to put in place. And while I'm glad to have it, I'm also glad to have not paid full price. I didn't realize that the walls and roof were made from foam board. It's sturdy enough, but for the original asking price, I definitely would've thought it would all be plastic.

I got the 40th anniversary edition of Cooler in recently from Premium Bandai. Absolutely nothing different from the first one, this is just a reissue with a new base thrown in. And the base is just their standard circular, acrylic, base for the Tamashii Nations stands, but with some artwork printed on it. It has slots for the armature of their stands, but one isn't included which is pretty cheap. However, having passed on him initially, I'm happy to have Cooler now because it is just a really cool figure. I think the character's a chump and his movie sucks, but he looks cool. They should reissue more Premium Bandai figures without silly repaints because there's a market for them. And in the case of Cooler, they were able to tighten things up and he has no loose joints or overly tight ones - just nice and smooth. I know there are lots of folks out there who missed out on The Ginyu Force that would like another crack at them. I might even be one of them.

There have been a few announcements for the Dragon Ball line over the past week. Incoming soon is a base, Cell Saga, Goku on the new Goku body that's trickling out now. There's also a new Android Saga Super Saiyan Vegeta coming that's on the Daima Vegeta body with a new head. He and Goku are already available for preorder. And coming to Premium Bandai is a new "awakening" Super Saiyan Goku with a similar approach in articulation and design that the new figures are using. He'll be a P-Bandai exclusive so he's $65 plus shipping.

Totally forgot. I pre-ordered that Lord of the Rings Hera figure. I just got a delay notice till next week which is fine because I didn't even know I was supposed to expect it today.

I liked the movie well enough, but I just think she looks cool. Always like it when they nail that ripped from the TV look

New base figures look great, especially the SSJ Goku and SSJ Vegeta. Going to try my current 3rd party base Goku heads in the SSJ body and if they are close enough, I’ll probably pass on the new SHF base Goku. I heard they switched skin tones again though. Wound up POing the new Krillin too even though I’d prefer a regular smiling face and a smaller head. I’m just a sucker for base figures and frankly this line hasn’t always delivered on those, at least in the face plate department.

Also got adult Daima Piccolo hanging in a private warehouse until at least Rogue is released, and hopefully the Japanese sites find a better import solution to ship to the US. He was on sale for $30ish at nin nin(might still be) which felt like a great price(or a wash with tariffs), if anything I will add his soft goods cape to Super Piccolo and sculpt a turban for those heads.

Edit: changed spelling of Vageta to Vegeta 🫢

A warning about the new SH Figuarts Monkey D. Luffy Future Island Egghead figure--the peg for the arm into the shoulder comes apart VERY easily. My son broke that peg apart yesterday, and the replacement is problematic as well. One of the Youtube reviewers has two of them, and his shoulder peg broke on both of them.

It's not actually breaking; the peg glue just won't hold it on due to the design of the peg and the tightness of the joint. The other Figuarts Luffy figures use this same peg, and if you extend the arm away from the torso and turn those figures it also wants to break the glue at the same point on the peg. However, there's no real reason to move the arm away from the torso on the other Luffy figures, but this Egghead Luffy has a bulky coat that forces you to extend the shoulder peg away from the torso to rotate the arm. When that peg is extended it doesn't take much pressure to break the glue. You can make this MUCH less likely by using shock oil on the quite-tight shoulder peg joint, but both of the ones I have are pretty tight out of the box. Usually that's great, but since the peg's design makes it a bit fragile the tightness is greater than the peg design and glue strength allows for.

Hopefully his second one will be fine with shock oil, but out of the box that Luffy is begging to be broken at the shoulder peg. Lots of people in Youtube review comments are also saying they broke their arm off. After my son broke the first arm off I examined the peg closely, and I noticed that the other arm he didn't break off was starting to separate whenever you rotate the arm at the shoulder peg--and yep, the glue broke within a few seconds of me trying to rotate it.

Like I said the other Luffy figures also have this shoulder peg design, but you usually don't separate it from the torso in a way that makes this an issue. The shoulder pegs on the other Luffys also aren't as tight as this Egghead Luffy so he's never had it happen on those, but if you extend the peg fully out and rotate I can also see the peg glue starting to give as you rotate the arm around on the other Luffys as well.

Thanks for the heads-up. I got my son one but havent given it yet. Will let him know how to handle the figure.

Looking like were gerrting a Chopper! And hoping that was a tease for the Merry they showed

Just recently got into SH Figuarts DBZ - this line is bloody incredible. Any must have recommendations for someone new to the line - I love DBZ mostly but have definitely dipped into DB, Super and Daima already!

The SHF Dragon Ball stuff is pretty varied and it all depends on your personal tastes. Some of the best executed characters aren't huge fan favorites. I'd say the best figures in the line might be Cooler, Nappa, Jiren Final Battle, and Krillin (Earth's Strongest Man). Future Trunks is pretty good, but he had some QC issues the first time around though I hear the reissue was better. They're also starting to redo a lot of big characters as we have new Cell Saga Goku and Super Saiyan Goku inbound which look pretty good (there should be some reviews out there for Super Saiyan Goku). The new Android Saga Super Saiyan Vegeta is on the Daima body which I liked quite a bit. I do like the Legendary Super Saiyan Goku and that's another one where if you get the reissue it's a little better as far as color-matching goes. I think my favorite current Goku is the Lowest Born Saiyan which should still be available for MSRP. A lot of these things can get expensive once they sell out, especially the Premium Bandai offerings. Those are annoying to try and track down if you miss out so if they ever put something up you think you might want you're better off to just order it. If you change your mind by the time it's delivered you should be able to offload it easily and probably at a small profit. They just put up a new "Awakening" Super Saiyan Goku if you don't like the bulky, shirtless, version.

Thanks for all the advice - I live in Australia making accessing the PBandais even harder! Making the most of a current US trip and have gone to town whilst here. I am really loving the daima bodies and am exciting to pick up these upcoming Gokus and Vegetas on these upcoming bucks!
