Mattel DC Figures

I don’t want the DCU as seen by Jose Luis Garcia Lopez

I see Todd as Frank Perdue or Dave Thomas. He’s in charge, but also the face of the company.
I give Todd credit for giving us figures no one else would have, for giving us vehicles others waved off for decades, and not at a wholly unreasonable price. Do McFarlane figures have issues, sure. Could they use more accessories and be cheaper, most likely. However where some see arrogance or an audacious personality I can see how being the "face" of the company also comes with a lot of baggage in an "it all depends on me" that many self owned organizations' "faces" run on. So while Todd might be an outlandish personality that can come with both positive and negative personality traits, it also can bring some left field positives like charting his own path (for better or worse). I can't help but believe that a lot of his willingness to do projects and figures no one else would also comes from a "everyone else said no, I'm going to say yes" place, especially as a creator who's received more "no's" from people above him that we can likely imagine.

I'm not a Todd fanboy but I will give the guy credit where I see it. And I appreciate that in the absence of Stan Lee's gregarious grandfather personality that carried the comics industry for so many years, that Todd (and to a lesser extent Rob Liefeld) are trying to keep that going.

But I do like how he wanted to capture artist versions and storylines. I know many like cohesive compatible lines, but for a lot of Metal I appreciated the vision. Then it didn't translate (for my eye) to the Knightfall and other series.

1000x this. When I saw the wave of DKR, and waves of Metal, I was excited. Storyline specific waves are things I've always wanted from Marvel AND DC. A post-Crisis Bat-Family that's a mix of Knightfall and NML era has always been a dream to collect since I was a kid, but every attempt at a Knightfall subline is an initial excitement, before they do the same 4 figures (Batman, Azbats, Catwoman, Bane) then stop.

This is what I want on my shelf, just add Harold and Alfred, and sub in the Nightwing and Azrael with their Knightfall era costumes. McFarlane technically has most of that, they're just... terrible figures, and horrible representations of these costumes.

All I know is that in 2019 when the news broke about Mattel losing most of the DC license, it was met with jubilation. The hated Mattel was finally done. When it came to light that the 7” scale would be used, there was more jubilation. At least on thefwoosh.

Now Mattel is back. The 6” scale is the going assumption on most of the internet. Now I’m trying to figure out where everyone is. All the Mattel haters and 6” scale haters. They’ve all gone radio

I honestly think this is selective memory on your part. I was active on Fwoosh then and I raged and gnashed teeth about the change and I definitely wasn't alone. I was upset at not getting that Mammoth BaF or the Black Canary figure they had shown.

I knew I didn't like a single figure McFarlane had made up to that point and was skeptical that Todd would make figures I wanted. And the change to seven inch scale made it so I had no interest at all since I couldn't even augment my existing collection with new costumes and characters.

So there were those of us who felt like that all along. But once you express that sentiment once or twice there's no point in continuing to harp on it, becaise the change is made and no amount of my whining was going to make that different.

Maybe it’s selective memory, but I do distinctly remember being told “this is our turn” referring to 7” scale. I was told that if I like the 6” scale, I should buy up all the older stuff. I was mocked and shouted down routinely.

Please take @PantherCult’s last paragraph to heart. Back in the Fwoosh days, you had the tendency to express your opinions forcefully and frequently, it became a bit overbearing at times. So, some of that shouting may have been directed more towards you than your opinions…

The bottom line is no one thinks Mattel is some nirvana, some of us just think it has the potential to be a better option than continuing with McFarlane Toys. If you have a differing opinion, that is fine, but railings against the change isn’t going to get you anywhere. The decision has already been made.

I'm absolutely sure this happened, because I also remember it. But I think you may just be misremembering how common it was or how many people were saying it (at least on Fwoosh - I can't speak to anywhere else). Fwoosh was always primarily a 6" space and I can't think of too many people there, ever, that were big 7"-only types. But there were a couple, for sure. Mostly the guys that tended to collect NECA and some of the older McFarlane and DC Direct stuff.
So not nobody, but maybe like...3 guys. That being said, it's been a long time and I can see how getting shouted down by even 3 guys on a thread populated by maybe two dozen people at most can feel like a hell of a lot. Especially in blurry memory.

I’m excited to see what Mattel will make. I have some McFarlane DC Multiverse figures. Mostly armored characters and Superman-related characters. I thought the two Black Manta figures were very nice. As were all of the Blue Beetle movie figures.

But the overall small headed and long legged design doesn’t look right to me for most characters. I still haven’t seen a basic Batman that looks good enough to buy.

If Mattel does move back to a 6-inch line, I admit it’s going to have to be pretty good to make me dive in. I’m still so happy with the DCUC overall that they’re going to be tough to beat. And I don’t exactly relish the thought of starting all over again for as deep into the DCU as we got. But I am hoping for tons of Fourth World deep dives.
